home births anyone?

Just wondering if any of you lovely ladies are/would consider a home birth? Or even a birthing center? DH and I are ttc #1 and I am smitten with the idea but I find there aren't many women out there who consider it. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Re: home births anyone?

  • Hi - we are planning a homebirth with our baby due in January.  But I agree, not only do women not consider it as an option, I've found that most are pretty judgemental/ vocally against it.  So much so, I haven't told my sister or brother our plans!

However, I've done extensive research, reading, and talking with people who have had homebirths and am 110% positive that we're making the best decision for our family.

There are some great resources out there - good luck!

That's my biggest roadblock. I have no idea where to even begin looking. Midwifery isn't supported in RI. I'm still looking though. I'll let you know if I come across any recommendations.

  • Check out this site - https://ribirth.net/

As far as I know there aren't any stand-alone birth centers in RI, but Memorial and W&I both have birth centers within the hospital.  From what I hear,  the staff at Memorial is really supportive of natural birth.

Three midwifes that frequently came up in my searches are Sue Smith, Michelle Palmer and Mary Mumford Haley.

    Good luck!

  •  there is a birth center in memorial hospital (pawt) Woman and infants has the ABC (alternative birthing center) and newport hospital does as well <--i have heard nothing but great things about Newport Hospital i believe they also do water births!

as far as home births go my MW Michelle Palmer does them but you have to contact her through Mary Mumford Haley first...i highly recommend her actually both of them they are greatSmile

  • i am late on this post but just wanted to add that the abc center at w&i is great. i did not use the center ( i chose the to be in the reg delivery rooms), but i did give birth to my two girls naturally and had some of the midwives from the abc center check on my throughout my labors. they were really great and supportive. also i did peek in there during a hosital tour and it looked really nice and way more comfortable than the delivery rooms! - i guess both are a little freaky though in their own right. anywho, if you are looking for someone to assist in a home birth i might try to contact a local doula who may be able to guide you in the process and give you some contacts. i beleive dariamar on the ri board used a doula you may want to try paging her - maybe she could be of some help? good luck! oh and dont let anyone make you feel uncomfortable...you and the baby run this show!

  • I feel your pain ladies!  I was so discouraged by the lack of options in RI that my DH and I decided to hustle our cookies 20 hours south to have our baby on The Farm in Tennessee with Ina May Gaskin and her fellow midwives. We had read Ina May's Guide to Childbirth and searched everywhere for a midwife who supported our view on a natural birth.....it was really frustrating how judgmental the CNMs were at 3 different practices.

Finally we met Sue Smith who works out of her home in Uxbridge, just over the RI/MA line and she give us prenatal care.  From what I hear Pawtucket Memorial is the best kept secret in RI when it comes to Natural Childbirth (although why its such a secret I will never know) and Mary Mumford Haley and Michelle Palmer are great resources. I just think it is sad that they are the only two options in a state with our population.

The ABC at Women & Infants seems more a gimic to me than anything....if you manage not to "risk out" (very easy to do) or can ensure it is available when you go into labor you are in luck, otherwise be prepared for techno-medical model....

If I had to give birth in RI and couldn't do a home birth....I would absolutely go Pawtucket Memorial. But I would recommend bringing a doula no matter what choice you make and if you can....go Home birth...everyone I know who has has not regretted it and swore it was the best thing they ever did.
