Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

any babies saying 2-words together at 12 months?

At DS's 12-month appointment the nurse asked if he was saying two words together... I was kind of in shock and didn't think this was a "norm" to even try to compare him to on the day he turns 12 months old.  Obviously he is nowhere near this.

Re: any babies saying 2-words together at 12 months?

  • ds say hi dada or hi doggy, he started doing that around 12 months, our pedi asked if ds could say at least two different words at his 12 month appt

  • Nope not even now at almost 2.

  • My son doesn't say 2 words together yet and I wasn't asked this at his 18 month appt.

  • Not at 12 months.  We are just now getting 2-3 words together.
  • DD has said "Get It" "Hi Gat" & "Hi Da" for a couple of months. However, she doesn't crawl/pull up/walk yet.

  • no.  don't worry.  that is ridiculous to expect a 12 month old to say two word thoughts.  honestly.  DS just now (at almost 19 months) is saying a few of the MOST simple two word phrases.

  • I don't know that DS even knows what mamama means.  So, no, two words together.  No way.
  • My pedi asked and I said that she could only say things that we normally say together as two words, like if we regularly say "don't touch" she would say "don't touch" but she didn't understand "don't" as a separate word, if that makes sense? The pedi said that was really good for her age and most kids can't string words yet.
  • DS has a HUGE HUGE vocabulary. Seriously 50+ words before he turned one. He's now 15 months and still doesn't string two words together. We try, but he's not feeling it yet.?

  • Most babies at 12m can say "mama," "dada" and one other word.

  • Our pedi never asked about 2-words together at the 12 month checkup. She just asked if DD said "any" words. She only said "dada" at 12 months. Now at 13 months she says "dada" "dad" and "poopoo" (which is the name of her lovey). She did walk into the livingroom the other night though when DH was sitting on the couch and said "hi dad"... but we think it was just a fluke... she hasn't said it again.

  • DD says "wah dat" when she points at everything (what's that?) and "hi da-da" but I don't think that's typical of kids her age.

  • Pedi only asked if he was babbling/trying to say things.  He has said "all done" once before and "hi dada" but he doesn't say them regularly or if asked.

  • DD can (hi daddy, hi mom, hi dog-dog, hi kitty) but pedi told us they only wanted 1-3 words by 15 months. Today is our 1-year appt; I'll ask again.

    Lily does the same two.

3/22/09 - Lily Grace, born at 33 weeks, 2 days
    9/12/14 - M/C @ 7 weeks, 1 day (ectopic)

  • Nope, unless you count "Uh oh" :).  She just started saying "No dog" this past week and she'll be 18 months soon. I don't think you can expect them to have sentences already, some babies just take longer.

  • She says "bubbles" and "pop" together (learned from Gymboree and doing bubbles in bath each night), but I'm not sure if that really counts.

no. no child should be doing 2 word utterances at that age (excepting "chunks" like "oh no" or "whats up"...idiomatic things like that). They are in the one-word stage for most of their 2nd year of life. The pedi probably just moved you to the next "checklist" and they'll continue to ask those questions until your LO has fulfilled all of them.
  • DD would say "what's this" around 12 months.  We thought we were hearing things, but the daycare lady said that she pointed and said it all the time.
  • They don't expect 2 word phrases until closer to age 2.

  • DS Is nearly 17 months and can only say "woof" and bah (bye)!!
