Sewing help and ideas please!

So a mom from my son's preschool dropped off 4 totes of maternity clothes today!  So awesome!  There was a ton of great stuff in there, and I a lot I'll wear, by only taking a 1/2 a bins worth, if that!  My preggo friend is coming tomorrow or Wed to have her go at it...

Anyway, there were two pieces that I need/want to do things with, but am pondering where to start.  The first is a pair of maternity capris.  They have one of those jersey/elastic waistbands attached to the top of the jean material.  The jersey is torn away right at the seam.  I'm debating taking the easy route and just trying to reattach the jersey (but will it tear again?) or add a small piece of fabric to the back to sew the jean to, then the jersey?

Also, there was a nightgown.  I'm not a nightgown person, but I got to thinking it might be nice for labor and/or the first few hours after birth when they are still checking you fairly frequently.  It buttons down pretty far for nursing.  But besides it being a nightgown, it's got lace on it, and just NMS in general...but I can see it's value...NWIM?  Anyway, I found a pic online, and am looking for suggestions on altering it.  It's not the exact one in the pic, but very similar.  The lace is a tiny bit different, and mine is long sleeve (which I might change.)  My initial thought is cutting all the lace off, but I think it might look odd then?  Maybe add something back in, like a simpler piece of ribbon?  Any ideas?  Or am I silly for bothering?

I've got to do something to thank this mom though...she has saved me so much money!  I have had clothes on loan for my other two pregnancies, so without the loaners, my own stash was kind of small.

Re: Sewing help and ideas please!

  • For the jersey-jean problem I would probably just fold the jersey band down all the way around the jeans. Match up the edges as best you can and then zigzag or zigzag and straight stitch around the whole thing that way the band stays the same size. Hopefully the zig zag will catch the torn jersey (maybe go over it a few times to make sure) and then you'll never know you fixed them since it will all be on the inside.

For the nightgown you could use some satin quilt binding around the edges and some ribbon to stich over whatever you don't like to be easiest. Otherwise you can rip off what you don't like and repair as needed.

I'm sure there are some much more expert sewers here to help....I'm far from it.

I love handmedowns so that's awesome she gave you so much!!
