I tried the Ameda Purely Yours, and the Medela seems to have more suction power.
I would definitely recommend a double pump. A single pump would take double the time, and if pumping isn't easy for you (as it's not easy for me!) then you want a more efficient method of pumping!
I also have a non-electric hand pump to cram in my bag when I am away from my DD..
Medela pump n style. It has been awesome- works well, large range of pumping levels, has battery pack as well, in case you can't reach an outlet, and what I found to be very important- you can easily find and buy extra parts. I had a lot of trouble when I first started pumping b/c of the pain I was in- thinking it was from improper latch with lo, but it was really b/c my breast shields were too small for me, so my LC told me to try larger shields, which I found quickly and easily and they were not too expensive. This was a lifesaver- I don't know if they have different sized shields for other pumps, but for me, it would have been the end of pumping had they not made them for medela. Also, my LC told me Medela was the best.
I am renting the Medela Symphony from the hospital and it's good but I don't have anything to compare it to. My SIL is giving me her Medela Pump In Style this week though and I'm returning the Symphony since it's $65/month and I'm glad to see the good reviews.
First of all, for both my boys I ended up renting a hospital grade pump for the first month. (Medela Lactina). It helped me learn to pump/teach my body to pump and build my supply. I had a really hard time just getting a full ounce out at first.
With DS1 I had a single, the Medela Swing after that. Being a SAHM and only pumping occasionally it was adequate. However, only having a single was a pain and took so long to pump both sides.
With DS2 I really wanted a double but the Medela was also so expensive. I really like the Ameda Purely Yours. I been able to pump just as effectively with that as I could with the Lactina, which isn't even comparing apples to apples, the Lactina is much more powerful. Obviously, since it's a hospital grade pump.
The Ameda is a little noisy but it's no big deal to me. And many of my Medela accessories still work well with it. I'll see if I can go back and find my original review of it and paste it back here.

Medela is the BEST! The Lactina or Symphony are the top of the line but cost over $1000 if you want to keep one instead of renting it from the hospital! YIKES... but they are soooo efficient and I wish I could afford one. I rented the Lactina for a few months and LOVED it but at $65/month, it was stupid to not just buy one. I ended up buying a Pump In Style and it's been great. It's on its second baby now and going strong. Very "incognito", can pump in the car! Not as good as the Lactina but much more affordable. (I actually bought mine used on Ebay. I know you "Aren't Supposed To" but blah blah blah. I don't have hundreds of dollars laying around to spare. I got mine for only $150 and cleaned it thoroughly myself before using it. Do what you have to do!)
Re: Recommend your electric breast pump please
I second the Medela PISA.
