locking knees while standing

A has started standing (while leaning/supporting herself on something else) a lot more lately. I've noticed that most of the time she is standing with her knees locked. I know that locking your knees is generally not a good think for extended periods of time - should I be worried about it with her for the ~5 minutes she stands at a time?

Re: locking knees while standing

  • I studied a lot of knees and legs in pedorthic school and don't ever remember any of our texts suggesting that locking the knees can cause any ill effects.  I'll glance over my texts again if I get a chance to see if there is actually an anatomical reason that people are told not to lock their knees...  but my gut says that it's not something to worry about! :)  I'd be more worried about her if she starts to walk and locks her knees while trying to walk.  That can be an issue.  But what she's doing while standing doesn't send any red flags up in my head. :)

  • Okay, after a cursory look into this, I found that it is possible to pass out when you're standing for LONG periods of time with locked knees (I won't bore you with the anatomy of why), but it appears that generally only happens when the body is under other forms of stress simultaneously, such as dehydration, being out in hot sun or under hot lights, stressful situations, etc.

No reason to worry about little A!

I don't have anything to back up this answer, but my instinct is that it's ok.  When DD was learning to stand, she often rolled her feet and would stand on the sides of her feet.  It was just a matter of her learning how to stand and move and support herself.  It lasted several weeks, but eventually she stopped doing it.  I know it's not the same, but my gut says your DD is just figuring out how to support her weight and once she starts trying to move, she will stop locking her knees.
