Pregnant after a Loss

after baby arrives (birth control ?)

I have been on so many different birth controls sense the age of 15 and I really think it caused some issues with getting pregnant...

I don't like how wacky my cycles were getting off birth control.

with DD I nursed her for a little over 2 years and that seemed to work for me pretty well because I never had a period until I stopped nursing her. Of course I know this is not full proof.

Is anyone going back to just using charting as their birth control method?

I think I want to try this. I got so use to checking cm and taking my temp in the morning I think it would be fine...just curious to what others are thinking...

Re: after baby arrives (birth control ?)

  • That's my plan.  I don't want to take any kind of birth control with hormones in it while I'm nursing.  So charting and natural family planning are the way we will do things.

  • After 2 years of TTC, I feel like I've been able to figure out my cycle very well and know when I'm *likely* to ovulate. Since we would be more than happy to have another baby, we'll probably just try to time things right.

  • I am never taking hormonal birth control again.  I am convinced that it contributed to my m/c and to the craziness that were my cycles after the m/c.  Plus, it was $40 per month, which is about what I'd spend on OPKs if I was charting.

I'm probably going to get a diaphram and chart and just use the diaphram in the "fertile time" - which will probably be longer at first until I get a better sense of my post-pg cycles.

To be honest, we will probably use the pull and pray method a lot too.  At this point we are not worried if we have an "oops" - we'd probably be really excited. We definitely want 2, if not 3, kids so if we have one a little sooner than planned we'll just roll with it.

  • Yes - DH and I used natural family planning before I was pregnant, in order to get pregnant, and we plan to use it after the baby comes too.  We are Catholic, but it's less of a religious decision for us - we just like going with the flow of my body instead of taking pills.  That said - I was on BC for 8 years before I met DH and when I came off it I was annoyed with the irregularity of my cycles too.  I had a 52 day cycle when I conceived this time around!  Charting takes some work, but I like it.
  • We aren't planning on using any BC.  We are hoping that BFing will work for the first few months, just because I would like at least a year or two between babies.  We have a VERY low chance of getting pregnant on our own though.... I would be VERY happy if we did, and we could skip the hell of IF.

  • Has anyone used an IUD? I've heard great things!

  • I'll be using VCF until DH gets snipped.  They want him to wait until the baby is at least 6 months old before they'll do the procedure.

  • I had an IUD! There was no AF for me at all for almost 3 years (closer to 4 if you count the time I was pregnant with DS)!

  • I was on the pill for a gazillian years, and the only reason I'd go back is because ever since I've been off of it, my skin is out of control. But really, I don't think I'll ever want to go on the pill again. Guess we'll see.

  • I charted to avoid successfully for 8 years (with one planned child during that time).  I highly recommend it but you *have* to be faithful to it and use a barrier method during any "possibly fertile" times.

  • I can no longer take any type of hormonal birth control.  We started TTC because birth control shot my blood pressure up to 160/110.  I stopped b/c and it was normal within 2 weeks.  Since that happened, my doctor has said no to anymore hormonal b/c.

I will go back to charting and condoms.  We want our kids pretty close together, so hopefully we won't be charting for long.

  • Might go the IUD route for a year or two before we fully commit to DH getting snipped. I tried the pill a few times with horrible results and we were lucky that pull and pray worked for as long as it did.

  • DH is planning on a vasectomy. In the mean time we'll be charting, using condoms and I'll be BFing.

  • Thanks ladies! Its nice to see a lot of us feel the same about the pill...DH really doesn't care either way but said its up to me its my body...and plus like others have said it we do get KU we would be excited...just hopefully not RIGHT after haha

Ill chart..check cm and use the pull out and pray method during my fertile time haha

But I might also look into the IUD thing...might not be too bad after im done nursing...

  • charting / pull and pray

I'm not a  candidate for hormonal bc due to clotting issues.

  • Knowing how hard it was to get pg with this LO ... I'll just chart and be happy if an oops happens anyway lol
  • I'm going to spend my "birth control" money on ovulation sticks and we are going to avoid days 14-20 accordingly.....

    it may sound silly.

I just think that bc was part of my problem and I don't want any hormones in my system while I"m nursing...

  • I'm not a fan of birth control. I never charted or anything but we used the with drawl method and it worked just fine for the 1st 9 years of our marriage, never had any accidents and only got pg once we started ttc. I obviously know its not fail proof but at this point getting pg again wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, after all we  are married and somewhat have our sh*t togetherStick out tongue
  • I want to use natural planning as well, and it worked for me for me for many many years, but I am so afraid of getting pg again i am not sure, I cannot afford any oops and my body can't handle another pg in the next year.
  • Yup, that is my plan.  Actually, it took my body so long to get its act together after my loss that I'm not even sure I need a plan.

  • I know this is looking way into the future...but we plan having 3 children.  I never went back on BC after having DS.  I won't after this one either, we'll use condoms.  I wouldn't mind going back on the pill, but DH would prefer if I stayed off it.  If I ended up getting pregnant again, we would be totally ok with it.

Heh.  Aside from the slip up in, oh, January of 2009 that led to the surprise baby that wasn't that led to the subsequent year of hellish TTCing. . .

    ;)

Seriously though, I get a little proud when I log into FF and see something like 48 cycles of charts.  :)

  • We use the sympto-thermal method of natural family planning and successfully avoiding getting pregnant for about 3 years.  We definitely plan on using that after this LO arrives.

It's good for me physically & emotionally, good for our marriage, and good for our finances!
