how did your little one act????
they are changing us formulas and want me to give up dairy! I live off dairy. I am afraid I will give up BFing if I have to give up dairy.

Re: who has a LO with dairy allergies??
I have no answers for you, but if I had to give up dairy, I would die.
Literally die.
Being dairy free is more scary than bedrest to me.
Uber scary ;-)
I am so bummed out! I can't give up dairy.

My little guy doesn't tolerate dairy. We found out around 3 weeks old when he started having bloody stools.
At first, I had a really hard time giving up dairy. After one week and no results from him, I even decided to quit BF and put him on Nutramigen. I was tired of not eating what I wanted. What surprised me the most was that I only lasted 24 hours of quitting BF before I had a meltdown. I missed BFing him way more than I expected. I felt like a failure. And it didn't help that Nutramigen smelled HORRIBLE and I felt bad for making him eat it.
So I'm going on 8 weeks now of being dairy (and soy) free. It gets easier. I do miss cheese and milk. And pizza. But I'm able to have some reasonable substitutes at least. Earth Balance makes a good dairy free butter. And I made some really good dairy/soy free brownies this week too. My mom's been an awesome researcher too. She found some dairy/soy free chocolate chips I'm going to try tonight.
And hey, at least it helped me lose all that baby weight.

i did it
it sucked big time- but it was worth it for the babe.
but seriously- i'd judge noone who decided to go to formula instead of giving up dairy- i thought about it allll the time.

Luckily Garrison's milk allergy is not as acute or extreme as others I have heard of. Basically I gave up "obvious" dairy (cheese, yogurt, ice cream) It still sucked but I did eat some baked goods and that often made me feel better about it ; ) I was pretty proud of myself for sticking with it-- though I think it contributed to me gaining 10+ pounds after I went back to work because it is hard to find meal options-- especially Lean Cuisine's,etc that don't have cheese or dairy in them. So I ate A LOT of carbs for a while and am now a fat a$$.
As for how she acted, I think G was a little bit fussy but really she handled it pretty well-- the issue was her skin (eczema) and that she spit up a lot. ( I think she also had a touch of reflux-- not sure if the two were related but the reflux seems gone now). I went off dairy when she was just about 3 months old after we couldn't get her skin to clear up with other efforts and the spit up got really bad-- but like I said, that may have been more related to reflux-- because once on zantac, that stopped. Luckily no issues of blood in her stool or vomit so, while we were never 100% sure it was dairy, her skin and spit up definitely improved when I wasn't on it. She has been on mostly formula for the past month (1-3 BF feedings a day until 2 weeks ago, when I dropped to just the overnight feeding and last breastfed saturday) so I have gone back on dairy the past two weeks and she seemed to tolerate it ok. Otherwise we feed her Nutramingen and Alimentum, which costs so much we are going to have to start selling plasma to afford them.
Good luck!!
Yes, James had a milk protein allergy diagnosed at 5 weeks old. He had blood in his stool-- a lot. It was very obvious, and very scary. We switched to formula then and I stopped BFing, because I couldn't imagine giving up dairy.
I am going to try BFing the next baby, and since there's an increased chance he will also have the milk protein allergy, I'm going to try going off dairy when I do it. I made a post a couple weeks ago and a lot of people responded with great suggestions and subtitutions I could use. We'll see how it goes!
I understand your trepidation though. Both my parents are from Wisconsin. In our household, cheese was a food group unto itself, and it's going to be really hard for me to give it up!
