Success after IF

A lot more napping all of a sudden at 14 mo?

I thought kids were supposed to be getting ready to drop a nap now.  But for the past few weeks mine have been sleeping later in the mornings (12-13 hours overnight) and they're taking two 2-hour naps (or sometimes a little longer)!  They have always been one-hour nappers.  I don't know what's going on.  And, of course, here comes the crazy part.  I just read a thing from St. Jude's Hospital last night about watching for the warning signs of cancer in babies because they can't tell you if something feels wrong.  One of the signs was sleeping a lot more.  That's nuts, right?  Is this extra sleep thing normal, you think?

  • DS started sleeping later in the morning around 13-15 months and his one nap a day lengthened to 2.5 hours previously it was less than an hour.

Per the fancy bloodworkup he had to check his immune system he is a perfectly healthy kid with a lot of respirtory issues.  No cancer.

I think it is safe to say that your kiddo's are healthy  Wink

  • I SO can't relate to the quantity, LOL, but I'll say that Kira finally started taking 1 nap (up from 0) at 12-13 months, and I'm thinking that it was around 14 months that her naps started to be a bit longer (sometimes 1+ hr).  It makes sense with all of their never-ending activity at that age! :)

No worries about cancer, Mommy -- napping is a good thing as long as it's not really excessive!

Define excessive.  We're looking at 4 hours+ of naps on top of 12-13 hours of night sleep per day.  This is a good thing, right?  Does the worry never stop?!

  • Some kids just sleep more than others. You are like me and worry a lot. DS got a knot on his head on Sunday from falling into a chair and I was terrified he had a concussion but he had nothing of the sort. Even though Hayden is younger than your twins, he sleeps about the same amount as yours do and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

  • The worry never stops, but I wouldn't call that excessive. :)  Call your pedi if that would help you better enjoy their naptime.  Especially when it's *both* of them, that tells me that they just need more sleep right now.  Hugs! :)

  • Cal started sleeping (naps & overnight) more after he started walking, which was around 13 mos.  I'm thinking it's either an age thing or a walking/more active thing.  As for the cancer link?  F.  Why do they need to go and scare us like that!!  Fortunately, you have two kids showing the same signs...the odds are slim-to-none that they'd both have cancer!

  • I was just about to post something similar because Juliet has had loads of sleep last night/today and immediately I assumed she was unwell... I couldn't keep her awake to eat her dinner, she was sitting in the high chair with her chin in her hands falling asleep.

I, too, think the fact that yours are both doing the same thing is probably a good sign it's not cancer. Maybe it's a growth spurt.

  • I'm glad to hear some of your kids are doing/have done similar things.  Just for the record, I am not really worried that they have cancer.  I just read these things and can't help but think of them when my kids do anything out of the ordinary.  It's a little voice in the back of my head, but I know it is a fairly hysterical voice.  :)

don't worry, mine do this too. In bed no later than 7pm (most nights 630ish) wakes up around 830ish. Naps for 2 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the evening. Been doing this since they were about 12 to 13 months old. They are going to be 17 months old. Don't forget they are more active now at 14 months. I find when they go through a growth spurt it happens too. Jordana would sleep longer if i let her too
