Completely OT: flat-screen tv - mount it or get a stand?

So DH and I finally joined the 21st century and ordred a 42-inch HD tv. Now the question is, do we mount it or get a new tv stand? I am a little concerned about DS's safety involving the stand (although I assume there is a way to make them safe on a stand). On the other hand, we probably won't be in our place much longer than 2 years, and I wonder if mounting it will be an expensive process that does a lot of damage to the wall? Curious how others have decided on stand vs. mounting. TIA!

  • We have all of ours mounted. If you do it properly they are very sturdy! Plus you end up with a ton of room!
  • Loading the player...
  • mount it - they look so much sleeker that way!  you also won't have to worry about keeping it clean from finger prints if it's higher on the wall.....
  • We mounted ours in the living room. I didn't care much either way, but my DH insisted. Now I am really glad we did. It looks so clean and it didn't appear that there would be too much wall damage at all. The mounting bracket wasn't all the expensive and I like it so much I am considering letting him mount the TV in our bedroom also.

  • We have ours on a stand because we hope to not be there much longer either
  • We have ours on a stand because of the cost and because we're probably going to move within the next two years. But I actually wish it was mounted, I just can't get DH to agree that it's worth it. It looks much sleeker and would be safer for LO mounted.
  • We have ours on a stand, but the plan is to mount it.  Like pp said, you save so much room by mounting.

  • We just put it freestanding on the cabinet as is.  It is a tall cabinet so the height is perfect.  The amount of effort and the cost of the mounting gear was not worth it to us, and we knew we were only going to be in our current house about 5 years so we opted not to hang it.

  • Mounted.  I love it being on the wall and takes up no extra space in the room.  We had it professionally done as well to make sure it was installed correctly.

  • We have both.  We had a 56in in the playroom on a stand.  The kids kept touching it and I was always concerned it would fall over.  It is a DLP so it cannot be put on the wall.  We decided to move that into the living room where the kids don't go and got a mountable tv for the playroom.  I love it.  It frees up a ton of room and the kids cannot touch it.  I was concerned that the mount would somehow fall or something but H assured me it is very safe.  If done correctly it shouldn't put big holes in the wall.
  • We use a stand. We bought this:

    https://www.amazon.com/Safety-1st-Prograde-Flat-Screen/dp/B001JJR3B0

It secures your TV to the wall, locking into the back of the TV where you would mount it and then screwing into the wall.

  • Mount it! So much easier than having it on a stand and having to worry about babyproofing the stand. We really want to mount ours before DD is mobile.
  • Mount. Unless you have a really large room, a TV that big (we have a 42" as well) looks ridiculous on a stand. DH mounted ours with the help of a couple friends and about two hours - but none of them really knew what they were doing. It looks fantastic.

One of our friends bought a 50" and has it on his entertainment center. The room it's in is large enough to accommodate that size, but it looks awful. It would look great on the wall though.

  • Thanks for all the opinions everybody! I think mounting would probably be best but I will definitely check out the link from the PP about securing one on a stand.

    Thanks again!
