MIL is driving me crazy

It's not entirely her fault because she doesn't know DD ... this is her first time visiting since DD was a month old (she lives overseas).

She isn't really able to read DD's cues and thus her "helping" with DD is more of a chore than anything.  She tries to hold her when she's squirming to be put down, picks her up when she's happily playing.  Tells her she's "naughty" Super Angry when she's whining because she just peed (yes, even though she was changed 10 minutes ago).

And, she's watching DD next Monday so DH and I can go to baseball opening day.

I'm a bit frightened.  She doesn't know how the CD's work (doesn't think she needs to) ... and she just doesn't know DD.

As DH said ... she won't kill her.
Should I just suck it up and enjoy myself with DH and let her deal with DD on her own terms?  She'll be gone in a week and a half and then won't see DD for another 6 months.  This is her only grandchild, and I know she does want to spend time with her and get to know her.

::sigh::

Re: MIL is driving me crazy

  • My inlaws are the same way so I say just suck it up unless it's something really serious. It's annoying but your dh is right, she's not going to hurt her, the worse case scenario is you end up with a crabby child and mil at the end of your night out! (((hugs)))

  • My IL's are the same way.  Just stright-up akwartd with the kids... it is painful to watch.

    Personally I never leave the kids with them.  DS is getting to the point that I would leave him since he is fairly easy to understand.  But even my parents who are great with DS, their idea of discipline is fairly out of date.
