If you BF for a year how did you wean?

I'm ready to start weaning but DS keeps grabing for my chest when he wants to nurse. Just wondering how everyone else went about the weaning process and how long did it take?

Re: If you BF for a year how did you wean?

  • dd self weaned at 14ish months (by 15 months we were totally done).  it was sad...i wasn't ready, but she was.  she basically dropped from 3 feedings per day to 2 (only morning/night time sessions) then a week later didn't want the am feeding, but still wanted night time (before bed).  it took another week and a half for her to be done with the PM feeding.

i think going slow is probably the easiest on your LO and the potential engorgement you may get.  I didn't have that much, but i think it was the slow weaning process.

sorry  - i'm probably not much help :/

  • I did at a year, and made a bad mistake in doing it too quickly and suffering from awful engorging! Do it like previous person stated, slowly! Go one week and cut down one feeding, the following the week another, till your left with one. Then do one feeding a day, everyother day, etc. I am sure you will be fine and so will your DC!
  • DS didn't seem to care one way or ther other :(

I gave up one feeding per week.  I started with the afternoon feeding - I just pumped less and less each day.  Then moved onto the next feeding.  The morning feeding was the last one I let go and it was really hard for me - It took about 2 weeks and the second week was really inconsistent (one day I'd get 1/2 oz, the next I'd get 4, etc.)  But eventually I could tell that my body wasn't producing anymore.

Oh yeah, and I wore cabbage leaves in my bra :)
    GL!

  • At 11 months he was BF 4 times a day, so I dropped one feeding a week.  I first dropped before the afternoon nap, then before the morning nap, then before bed, and last was first thing in the morning.

I started giving him cow's milk to replace the breastmilk, but found that he didn't need the milk to fall asleep.  So instead he just gets milk at meals and other random times throughout the day (in a sippy cup).

I was amazed at how easy it was and how well he adjusted.  It hardly phased him.

My breasts were VERY engored for a week. It hurt BAD. Just a heads up!  Hot showers helped.   Good luck!
