Success after IF

do you let LO do his/her own bottle?

Now that I've decided and started to wean...I'm giving DD daytime bottles, which I had never done before.  She seems to love to do it herself--even sitting on the floor by herself.  It seems so unloving to me since I'm used to the cuddling of nursing but there tends to be less drama if she just does it alone.  Granted I'm nearby but still.

WDYT?

  • It is funny, even up to a year DD never really wanted to hold the bottle.  Sippies yes, but bottles no.

I think it made our bottle ending easier. (just talked about that last night to DH)

  • Well I work p/t so DD got bottles when I was at work and as she got older, she started to hold the bottle herself.  I think it's good for them.  It will help when she is older and will be using a sippy cup.  I think you are fine.  It is tough since you are used to cuddling, but I think letting her do it herself is the way to go.
  • Eli refuses to be held to drink his bottles.  He likes to be propped up on a pillow (or a boppy at DC) and hold the bottle himself.  Ben can do either.  He likes to be held for his night time bottle, but will pretty much hold it on his own during the day.

It's kind of nice for us that they're independent that way.  I can actually take a few minutes to get something done while they eat instead of having to be stuck to the couch until they're done.

I know I am going to be in the minority here......I cannot wait for this to happen!

BUT......DS1 never fricking held his own bottle. He was great with the sippies (started using them around 6 months....), but he had no interest in holding the bottles. We were using Born Free bottles with him and they are pretty heavy, so I always wondered if it was because of that.

With DS2, we are using Dr. Brown's and they are much lighter. He is already putting his hands on his bottles (which DS1 never did....), so I am secretly hoping he will hold his own bottle!!

I can see what you mean about it not be "loving," but personally I think there are a lot of other ways to bond and love your child than during a feeding.

  • Never.   Even at almost a year, Paige gets in her boppy and we cuddle for bottle time.  She kicks back and relaxes, and we both really enjoy it.  We will do it this way until the day she is finished with bottles.

  • Brady never held his bottle on his own, ever. He got a bedtime bottle until he was 15 months old, and even then he wouldnt hold it. He was fine with sippy cups, but not the bottle. So he never held his own. And I have to admit, I loved the cuddle time since he was too busy to cuddle the rest of the day.

Nolan isnt holding his own bottle yet...but I am still holding out hope that he will.

I should add, this hasn't effected her ability to hold a sippy whatsoever.  She does this herself just fine, and has been for the past month or so.  She knows the difference between the two.  WHen she sees a bottle, she knows it is time to get up in our laps and snuggle.  I love it.

Haha, could our kids be any more alike?!?!? :o)

  • I think it is good if they hold their bottle.  DS was bad at holding it...only did it when he wanted to.  he is on sippy now, but gets a bottle when he doesn't want to suck on the sippy and he will hold his bottle.
  • ok i'm glad this is an "ok" thing to do, LOL

    thanks!

  • DS held his own bottle at like 7-8 months and I was more than happy to encourage that.  From 9 months, he'd walk around the house drinking the bottle.  He was quick about it and was never one of those kids with a bottle in his mouth all the time so I never worried about it.   At night, we'd sit next to each other in the glider and I'd read him stories while he held his bottle and drank it-- I much preferred that to having to feed him the bottle and I think he liked it too.
  • I think you are lucky!  My DS never held his own bottle, and the transition to milk in the sippy was awful.  The only way he will drink it is if he sits on my lap and I hold the sippy for him too.  He does fine with water in the sippy on his own, but it is just milk!  And he will hold his own sippy with milk when DH gives it to him...I guess I just have a lazy little guy, who likes to sit with me to drink his milk!  I would love it if he would start drinking his milk on his own and during a meal...especially since I have #2 coming soon.  I see myself sitting on the couch all day long feeding one child or another...

  • I didn't know you were weaning! Hope it's going ok and not too hard on you. For us, the eventual end was easier than anticipated because it was such a gradual process as my supply decreased and he started refusing more and more.

As for feeding himself, we only do that on occasion - like if I'm making other bottles or something and he's too fussy to let him wait, or in the car if I have to do something and need both hands he'll feed himself. Otherwise I prefer to feed him, especially now that I know he CAN do it himself. I figure he's doing it himself 75% of the time at daycare so I'd like him to get the snuggles when I can give them.

  • My DD always wanted to hold her own bottle.  She was more into drinking  a lot.  Pausing, playing, then drinking more.

I just went with it.  Sometimes baby knows best.
