Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

VBAC

Hello,

I am new here and was just wondering if anybody has done or has tried a VBAC.  My son will be one on Saturday and we have started talking about trying for a second soon.  I needed a c-section with my son because the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck (twice) and his heart rate was dropping.  I would like to try a VBAC for the next one, but am also kind of nervous about it.  I would appreciate hearing about anybody's experiences.

 Thanks so much!

Re: VBAC

  • Page Iris - - her siggy says she has VBAC info.   Or maybe she'll just see this post and give you some info.

  • I had a fantastic VBAC. I think the things to remember are that there are risks to both a VBAC and a repeat c-section. Statistically, a repeat section is riskier. The biggest risk of a VBAC is uterine rupture, but the chance of that happening is less than 1% (around 0.6% actually), which is about the same chance of any other issue. It's very rare, and if it does happen, it can occur before labor even begins. But again, very rare.

My advice is to find a care provider who has a high VBAC rate (70% or more) and who does them routinely. A midwife is more likely to meet these criteria than an OB, but there are OBs out there who are proVBAC and who do them often. The important thing is to be comfortable with the person you choose and believe that they will help you achieve your goal.

  • I haven't had one, or done much research yet as I'm not certain we will have a number two.  But, if we do, I certainly want to try for a VBAC.  Almost a year later and I'm still terribly disappointed in my first birth experience.

The point of my reply, though, is to say around here (in Oklahoma), it is difficult to find a care-provider or a hospital that will do a VBAC, due to reasons associated with medical malpractice insurance.  I think my only choice is the university hospital, as the other hosptials in town don't do VBACs.  Since I loved the midwife I used for my first pregnancy, I will be using her again and have already confirmed that she has a great VBAC success rate (and she delivers at the university hospital I mentioned).

  • I wanted to do a vbac but due to complications couldn't due it so ended up w/ another c-sect. I agree w/ pp about finding an ob that will do it and has a good success rate. My ob told me if U wanted a vbac we would have to wait 18 months before getting pg again so that may be something to consider too.

  • My friend just had a successful VBAC yesterday.  I know that she specifically looked for a doctor that would allow her to have one.  Also, her first c-section was only because her daughter was breech.
