Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Anyone's LO drop in weight percentile at 9mo?

We just had DS's 9month check up on Friday and I was kinda surprised that he dropped from the 50% to the 25% on the growth charts.  His Pediatrician said she was not worried...but, I am a little concerned.  He is still BF and eats purees and finger foods pretty well.  Just wanted to see if anyone else had a similar situation??  TIA :)

  • YES!!!

DD was always in the 90th percentile. When we went for the 9 month check up, she had fallen to the 70th percentile. I was a bit worried, but the Dr. said she is fine. It just happens.

  • yes, I think he dropped from 50% to 35% (or somewhere along those lines)....he only gained 7oz in that 3month period.  Our pede wasn't worried either.  he said that after 6months, LOs gain, on average, 1oz/week.  He grew 2inches and hitting milestones, etc, so they were not worried.
  • I have seen many posts about this, so I do think that it happens a lot at this age. I wouldnt worry if the dr. isnt worried.  I am wondering how my dd will do.  She seems to be getting longer...but I don't know how much weight she is gaining.  She is usually off the chart for length and 85 percentile for weight.

  • We dropped from 10 percent to not on the charts. Our pedi isn't concerned, but we need to go this week to get Ry weighed again.
  • Yup, he dropped from 97th to 90th.  Still 97th for length.

  • Yes...90th to 50th....but he grew almost three inches!!
  • Breastfed babies in particular tend to drop in the charts at a certain point.
  • Yes!  We went from 25%ile in weight to 5%ile.  Dr. wasn't concerned because for about 6 weeks, she wasn't eating when she was sick.  We went through three different antibiotics so I didn't expect much of a gain...especially since the one antibiotic made her stomach upset.  I think this happens a lot at this age.  Is your LO more active this time around?  That also plays into it.

  • My DD did the same thing. I think it is partially because they are becoming more mobile.

  • Yes! DS was always the 95% in height and weight. At his "9m" appointment he dropped to 75% weight and 50% height. The dr. didn't express any concern.

Yup. I'm pretty sure it's common with BF babies. Mine was off the charts for weight but dropped to the 75th percentile. She shot off the charts in height though, so she's leaning up.

Has your LO gotten more active lately (i.e. crawling, scooting, standing)? That could lead to burning a lot of calories. Mine is army crawling everywhere and that's when we noticed the drop.

  • yep, same thing.  she went from 75% to 56%.  pedi said it was bc she was so much more mobile now.  she was still bf and ate solids 3 times a day.  i was a little concerned as well, so i'm making sure she finishes her meals, and is getting enough bm.  she hasn't  been drinking as much bm, so i try to let her snack on it a little bit more.
