Babies on the Brain

Last night's labor class

SO um, DH and I were the only ones there. Since DH works at the hospital the lady "teaching" knew him and it was more like a meeting than a class. It was kinda odd. We watched a video where the baby came out covered in white stuff and to me it looked like raw chicken, the part with skin on it, ya know? I really did not know they looked all white like that. Then we walked upstairs to L&D. I'd been there before but they've redone it with wood floors and all. It was nice. The baby stays in the room with you, only sick babies go to the nursery. So that was it. Not too eventful.

Re: Last night's labor class

  • Well, that kinda sucks b/c you look forward to that kind of thing & then it's not what you expected...

White stuff=vernix. Most babies don't have much (usually, it's only in skin folds & under the arms), but babies born 36-38 weeks tend to have more. It's a good thing it washes off! It's yucky!!

  • EWWW I hate raw chicken. I will have to make them wash my baby off before I see/hold it lol.
  • ^ Umm, not necessarily true.

My son was born AFTER his due date and he was covered in vernix.  It's fine... they wipe it off pretty good and then they bathe your baby in the nursery the first day.  They also come out purple - but they pinken (is that a word?) up pretty quickly once they start crying.

  • Doodle, that's why I said tend to have more and most babies don't have much

Seeing hundreds of births, I am generalizing & why I said most & tend.....it is the truth, and as always, there are exceptions to the "norm"

  • My opinion is babies don't come out looking their best with all the stuff on em! But when it's your child you're seeing, you won't 'see' the grossness (?). I see that a lot on Baby Story or Bringing Home Baby. I just try not to look at that and just think 'awwwwww'. LOL

I guess it'll be nice in the future to be the only ones in the class....special treatment!
