I know this has been asked before, but its been a while... I'm trying to see what else I need to buy. how many of these things do I need or do i even need them?
Receiving Blankets
Swaddle Blankets
Burp Cloths
Sleep Sacks/Gowns
Other Blankets
Bibs
Other must haves?
I'm realizing I really have no clue what I am doing or what is about to happen to me.
Re: How much of things?
Receiving Blankets- I had about 15-20. We used them for burp cloths, light blankets etc. I much preferred them as burp cloths to the small ones
Swaddle Blankets- None. G hated to be swaddled. I did have 4 sleep sacks that he liked though.
Burp Cloths- None, see above
Sleep Sacks/Gowns- 4, see above
Other Blankets- We have eleven thousand blankets. I'm of the opinion that you can never have too many. Now that he's older he has 3 or 4 that he likes to sleep with, and I liked having extras for when the favorites were in the wash, to throw on the floor etc.
Bibs- We had a TON of bibs. G was a spitter upper so we went through a lot of bibs. We probably had/have 15 or 20
Receiving Blankets - Barely use these. Could get away with having 2
Swaddle Blankets - 2-3 if your baby ends up liking being swaddled. I wish I would have returned some of the ones we received. We didn't swaddle very long.
Burp Cloths - lots and lots! I have a drawer in his room with just burp cloths and bibs and another drawer in our entertainment center in the living room dedicated to them. We go through a ton of them and bibs.
Sleep Sacks/Gowns - 2 sleep sacks. We use one every night.
Other Blankets - a few
Bibs - lots!
Other must haves? Pacifiers and pacifier clips so they don't fall on the floor constantly. We use soothie pacifiers and the soothie clips suck. We have a pacifier holder that has like a bugee cord type thing on the end so it works with any pacifier. Sensitive wipes and sensitive baby wash (Aveeno I think - no dye or perfumes). The Johnson and Johnson stuff was too harsh for him. Nasal saline mist spray (aerosol can) and nasal aspirators. Don't think they have it at BRU but they do at CVS, Walgreens, etc. Mylicon, Gripe water. Otherwise, big items like bouncer, swing, and activity mat are life savers for us.

I swaddle with receiving blankets, plus I use them for other things - in the carseat for head support and one for warmth, quick place to lay down baby, changing pad. I'd say 8 is a minimum for me and a dozen isn't a crazy number. Make sure they are a decent size. The dimensions are on the package. Gerber ones are too small to be useful for swaddling. BRU Koala Kids ones are fine.
I've never used a swaddle blanket they seem too expensive to me and I know if I tried to use one it'd get dirty right away.
Burp cloths... well, DD spit up some but DS really doesn't spit up hardly at all. I'd get maybe 6 of the cheap "cloth diaper" type of burp cloths. Make sure they are cotton as polyester doesn't absorb.
To me a sleep sack is a Halo type thing and gowns are the little nightgowns. DD was a summer baby and I did not use a sleep sack on her until it got cold. 1-2 sleep sacks should do it. Nightgowns - I probably had 10 plus about 6 pairs of sleepers. The cutest sleepers always seem to have snaps. Don't get them. Doing up a million snaps at 2am is not fun. Get the cheap gerber or circo zip up sleepers. I like the nightgowns too but I struggled getting them on DD because that was a lot of material to put over a newborn's head... with DS I figured out that you can put them on over their feet and pull them up and it was much much easier that way.
DD was not a drooler and never wore bibs of any sort until she started solids. DS is a bit of a drooler and we have maybe 5 drool bibs.
Another must-have is socks. In general, cute socks do not work. They will not stay on. Socks that stand a chance of staying on look like grown-up socks in minature.
It's funny how different people prefer different things! LOL We don't use the receiving blankets much (at least not yet) and I hate the zip-up sleepers. I'm all for snaps! I don't like how the zip ones go down one leg, it's a pain for me to pull the other leg out when I can just unsnap both legs.
I guess if anything this poll tells you, sad, is that just get a few of different things and see what works best for you.

Receiving Blankets - we have 4 of the lightweight Carters ones, that's plenty. I have 3 nice store bought blankets. And about 20 handmade blankets. (over estimate, but still). I could do without some of the handmade ones, but some are huge and will be great to use outside when it gets warmer. I think I have a good amount of storebought ones - I wouldn't need more than that.
Swaddle Blankets - I only have 2 of the Sozo ones. We had 1 in the beginning and I bought another one at 2 months old. I wash them weekly, unless he gets them dirty.
Burp Cloths - probably 20 of these? When I was home, I had them all over the house. By the sofa, by his crib, by my bed, in the kitchen. Plus in the car and each diaper bag. Now I use them less, but I loved having that many at home. Plus, it never failed that he would spit up right after I'd put them all in the laundry and not replaced them in the usual spots.
Sleep Sacks/Gowns - I had 6 gowns. 4 of the Gerber ones and 2 from Carters. At first I didn't think we'd use them, but I ended up loving them for the first 2 months. C got too long for them after that point, also the Carters ones are super long compared to the Gerber ones, but I found the Gerber to be more lightweight. I had 2 fleece sleep sacks and only used them during the day. He sleeps too hot and since he has to be swaddled, I didn't want him to overheat.
Other Blankets
Bibs - we have about 15. C never needed them unless he was getting a bottle, but I use 1 daily now that he's eating cereal.
Be sure to have some Little Tummy's or Mylacon at home when you get there. We got a "care package" gift from J's boss with all sorts of meds. C had a stomach ache one night and it was nice to have that stuff and not have to send J out to get it. I never thought to buy any.
Also, the Gerber onesies run SMALL. We had quite a few of the 3-6 month ones that C never wore because he had a TON of smaller clothes. I bought a package of 6-9 last week and they fit well.
We're still in the 3 month Carters onesies, though.
Every baby and every parent is different. With that in mind, here's what we use:
Receiving Blankets - a pack of 4 is enough. We just use them for on-the-go changing or a light blanket mostly.
Swaddle Blankets - I highly recommend the Halo brand. We love them! I suck at swaddling with a loose blanket, plus its safer (in the event the swaddle comes undone and becomes a suffocation hazard). We have 3 right now and that seems like a good number, just depending on how often you want to do laundry.
Burp Cloths - my second spits up a lot, and we have them all over the house, so if yours spits up a lot too, I'd say 15-20+.
Sleep Sacks/Gowns - In my mind, those are different things. A sleepsack is a wearable blanket, like the Halo ones. A gowns is a open sleeper. We didn't use any gowns, but my first slept in Halo sleepsacks for a long time after he was done being swaddled. Maybe start with 2 in each of the smaller sizes?
Other Blankets - just 2 or 3 more is enough really. We like having a thermal/waffle one and a fleecey one.
Bibs - again, mine spits up a lot, so we use them a lot. 15-20+
