I am thinking about cloth diapering...HELP! Bum Genius?

So I am throwing around the idea of cloth diapering.  I am thinking about bum genius.......

Do I want the one size 3.0's or the All in one?

Also what else do I need to buy? The diaper inserts?

Please tell me how this all works, what do you do when they have been used, just throw them straight in the washer? is there an insert you throw away after every use?

What is a good number of diapers to start with?

Where do you get yours at?

  • First, the BGs don't often fit newborns - you'll need a different system until they get to about 10-12 lbs.  Second, not all dipes fit all children equally well, so you probably don't want to invest in one kind of diaper until you figure out what works for you (for example, my DD can't wear the regular BG3s because she's sensitive to the microfiber they're lined with).

Here are a couple of links to get you started with the basic info: https://www.theecofriendlyfamily.com/search/label/Cloth%20Diaper, https://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com/basics.htm.  You may want to look into a trial as well to try the different types of dipes especially if you don't have a store near you where you can go in and get hands on.  Here's one that is popular: https://www.jilliansdrawers.com/products/clothdiapers/tryclothfor10

  • The BG's come with inserts. The one size fit from about ten pounds on so you'll need something for newborn size. With both kinds you're looking at they go in the laundry after each use. There is nothing to throw away on these. When baby starts having solid poops after solids have been introduced awhile you could use disposable liners to make plopping poop easier. But it's not necessary. Diaper sprayers or scraping solids off with a knife or just dunking and swishing in the toilet also work. I have instructions in my bio to make a sprayer. It's cheaper than buying and pretty easy to make/install. This board also has a blog that is incredibly useful for cders. I can't link from my phone. But look for the Eco-friendly family blog in siggies and click. Lots of great info.
  • We have only been CDIng for a couple weeks but I LOVE LOVE LOVE our BG 3.0 one size!!!  Our son is already 5 months so we only got the 18 pack (I'd probably do the 24 for a younger baby though because they need to be changed a LOT more!!)  I'd wait to buy anything else.  They already come with inserts.

Depending on who you go with check out the return policy on the BG's. For Kelly's Closet they give you 45 days so you might want to get them later when you are going to be using them to make sure you like them.  They have a 10% off coupon right now though for the 24 pack if you do get them now.  The code is BGMAGTEN I believe.  Look it up online if that doesn't work.  They usually have some kind of codes that work though.  Also if you're not sure, jillian's drawer has a CD trial system for $10 plus shipping, then you get 10% off any diapers that you decide to keep.

One thing you should have with CD's though is a wet bag and a detergent that works for CD's.  I tried all f&c and it was SMELLY!!!  I think using the tide cleared up all the smells though!  Yay!

I generally only takes me 5 mins a day to care for the diapers though with 18 of them.  one day I put them in the washer, put the inserts in the dryer and hang the outer shell (sounds like a pain, but the outer shells dry SOO fast!!!) and the next day I stuff the diapers.  Sounds like a lot more work than what it is!  It's really easy and I HATE laundry!!

I'm going to be getting a diaper sprayer to get rid of poop but you can also get liners if you don't want to deal with it and just throw away the liners.  It's about $7 for 100 liners though so that can get kind of expensive.  (If you are BFing you can just throw the entire diaper poop and all into washer after taking out the insert until the baby starts eating formula or solids)
