coloring books, snacks, stickers, portable dvd player, easily removable shoes for both you and the kid (both have to come off during security), easily folding stroller (through the x-ray), no large jacket on either of you (or belt), board last if possible, paci if they still use one, new small toy they've never seen, finger puppets (ikea has cute ones)....
at 2 yo they arent free so they need a seat, of course in flight you can have them on your lap if needed.
we've flown 8 times since DS was 4 mos, we just came back from FL and it was the hardest once since he was 15 mo and running around.
tips-
direct flights only!
bring snacks
pull out a new toy, or fun light up toy before take off.
Change diaper about 40 mins befre the flight so you arent rushing when they board.
bring a easy folding stroller, pack enough diapers, wipes--anit bacterial wipes for the plane.
bring a sippy full--they let you have it through security.
Take his shoes off before you get to security
pack easy foods to eat, and lots of them.
check bags
check with the airline to see whats considered free to check for baby, usually its one baby item--so carseat, pnp etc. wherever you are going, try to have stuff there. like my mom has a crib and a car seat for when we visit.
try to fly during nap time if possible.
Wear him out in the airport, let him walk a lot before getting on the plane.
bring comfort items--paci, blankey etc.
last time we flew with DH and he had a laptop with Elmo DVD's--helped in the airport and on the plane when he was fussy.I dont know if I couldve lugged it around by myself
when you are on the plane, get things out you may need and stick them in the pocket for take off access.
and when you feel your ears are getting clogged, have him take a sip of his drink, it will pop them.

ditto most of the above - we just flew 5 hrs cross country on Sat. cheerios literally saved my life. i have no idea how that kept her entertained for that long, but it did.
Even if you DC is under 2 buy a seat! I am flying Wed with DD by myself.... I have stocked up on snacks and dollar bin toys. I also will have my laptop for DVDs. I am hoping it goes well!
