my laptop needs a new hard drive...

Crying

the good news is it's still covered by the dell warranty i purchased with the laptop.  the bad news is it seems they're going to send me the new one and i have to install it and figure out what to do about getting my data off the old one because the prob with the system is i can't boot into windows at all, not in safe mode or anything.  anyone have any thoughts/suggestions or ideas?  they said to try a local tech that specializes in data recovery.  nooo idea how much this is going to cost me or what they'll be able to recover.  anyone gone through anything similar or have any ideas?

also - soooo, tell me about future backup options for saving my stuff somewhere i don't have to worry about this!  :-(

Re: my laptop needs a new hard drive...

  • We just went through this with a PC.

We were quoted $75 for recovery.  Ours wasn't recoverable unfortunately, so no fee.

Putting in a new hard drive is SUPER easy.  It literally just snaps in and you are good to go.  Then you have to reinstall the operating system and any programs you had on your laptop.

Just make sure you have the back up cd for your operating system.  We didn't have ours - it was conveniently saved on the hard drive apparently and we never got a message to create a back up CD - go figure.

Future back up options - External hard drive.  This was recommended to us.  Then you can occasionally dump everything on the external drive and the odds of both going at the same time are close to null.

If you get the external drive, they can probably do the recover from your hard drive to the external drive.  We saw external drives at Best Buy starting at like $79 if I recall.

  • Yeah, it shouldn't be too expensive to have the data backed up if it can be done.

There's even 1 TByte (terebyte) on the web for $99 if you even want to go that big.
  • that doesn't sound too bad - $100 for recovery.  but man i hope they can do it.

dh and i have been talking about some sort of back up system since we'll soon be taking pictures of our DD and not want to lose those.  not that i want to lose ANY of the stuff i had - i have a ton of music from itunes and pictures and files.....  ::shudder::  i don't want to think about it since it won't make a difference but man..

i still have ZERO idea what happened too.  all of a sudden one morning i came downstairs and opened my computer to a totally black screen.  i was like wtf and couldn't get it to clear or shut down or restart or whatever so manually shut it off and it never would restart and boot into windows after that.  wah!!!
