(XPed from my local...)
I'll be nearly 7 weeks. The book I have says that it'll probably be a full medical history, and if this were the person who'd be there at delivery, we'd start to address my hopes and desires for the actual birth.
What else? We'll be moving in July, so this is the person
who, assuming a normal and healthy pregnancy, will be doing first and
some of the second tri appointments and tests, but not anything in the
last four months. What should I ask and/or expect?
If they didn't tell me to expect an internal ultrasound, is there a chance I'll have one anyway and hear the (hopefully there) heartbeat?
Holy crap, this suddenly feels very real!
Re: First OB appointment tomorrow, help!
I would ask for a list of tests & what they are for & when done, so that you can make an educated choice to have or not have the tests.
Wear panties that you don't care who sees.
Take a pad, in case they do an internal u/s, so that you don't get gel soaked undies to enjoy.
Make sure you let them know up front if you have a latx allergy or an allergy to the powder on gloves or condoms (they put a condom on the internal wands at many offices)
Ask about eye and dental visits, and how pg effects them.
Make sure to ask them about your bp, if you tend to run high or low.
When they give you a list of foods to advoid, don't even look at it. It'll freak you out.
Eat a small snack prior to your visit.
Be prepared to pee in a cup. (as in take your own soap if you don't like what they have)
Take something to read. Waiting room waits can be famous for being hugely overdue.
And, take it from a pro, ask to be weighed backwards, and never ask or peek about your weight. It's easy to obsess over, especially for people like you and me who like to feel some control.
Honestly, I'm surprised they're seeing you this early. I think my OB waited until 10.5+ weeks before our initial appointment. Then, it was just as speedy described.
If you know where you are moving, I suggest looking for an OB there, now. You don't want to be stuck without one when you're that far along.
My first appt was u/s, full medical history (DH included) pee in a cup and blood work. They also gave me other pregnancy related information. They did tell me I would have an u/s, and tried an abdominal but couldn't see anything, so I guess I wasn't "warned" about the vaginal but at least I knew it was a possibility. Warn your DH if he's going with you! Write down any questions you want to ask. Good luck! It will be great!
ETA: I was 6w6d
I didn't go for my first appt until I was 9 weeks, but they did an internal to date the pregnancy since I was on BC before the BFP, so I had no clue when I may have ovulated.
They did a pap and a history. They went over dos/don'ts, gave me a bunch of PNV samples, and information on what to expect for the rest of the pregnancy.
i am SO doing this next time. great advice, jenni.
Don't get too excited. Our first apt wasn't much. The nurse "scolded" us on coming in before 13 weeks, and they didn't take a full medical history. Basically it was an empathetic nod when I talked about morning sickness. (I actually really liked my doctor, clinic, and even the nurse... the apt just wasn't anything like the books say).
We had an ultrasound at 5 wks, but it was to check for ectopic pregnancy. (and not at the doctor's apt). It's not standard. You'll get one around 18-20 wks. No heartbeat on the doppler until about 13 wks.
My first appt. was at 6 weeks and they did ... PG confirmation by pee test, urine check for UTIs, weight, BP, full medical history, bloodwork for STDs & immunities. The practices here don't have u/s machines in house, so you don't get an u/s unless you need one for dating purposes, spotting, history of loss, etc.
GL today, Bug!
