First OB appointment tomorrow, help!

(XPed from my local...)

I'll be nearly 7 weeks. The book I have says that it'll probably be a full medical history, and if this were the person who'd be there at delivery, we'd start to address my hopes and desires for the actual birth.

What else? We'll be moving in July, so this is the person who, assuming a normal and healthy pregnancy, will be doing first and some of the second tri appointments and tests, but not anything in the last four months. What should I ask and/or expect?

If they didn't tell me to expect an internal ultrasound, is there a chance I'll have one anyway and hear the (hopefully there) heartbeat?

Holy crap, this suddenly feels very real!

Re: First OB appointment tomorrow, help!

  • my dr doesn't do any ultrasounds, so as long as you know when your last AF was they dont' send us for one to date the pregnancy.  they did a pap smear type exam and gave me a bunch of info about what to eat, what's normal/abnormal, etc.  we did not talk birth plan stuff.  since he doesn't do U/S we couldn't hear the heartbeat until 12w because that's when a doppler can pick it up.

  • Seven weeks is really early. Mostly they will have you pee in a cup and do blood work to confirm the pg and have beinging stats for your chart. Then they go from there. GL
  • I would ask for a list of tests & what they are for & when done, so that you can make an educated choice to have or not have the tests.

Wear panties that you don't care who sees.

Take a pad, in case they do an internal u/s, so that you don't get gel soaked undies to enjoy.

Make sure you let them know up front if you have a latx allergy or an allergy to the powder on gloves or condoms (they put a condom on the internal wands at many offices)

Ask about eye and dental visits, and how pg effects them.

Make sure to ask them about your bp, if you tend to run high or low.

When they give you a list of foods to advoid, don't even look at it.  It'll freak you out.

Eat a small snack prior to your visit.

Be prepared to pee in a cup.  (as in take your own soap if you don't like what they have)

Take something to read.  Waiting room waits can be famous for being hugely overdue.

And, take it from a pro, ask to be weighed backwards, and never ask or peek about your weight.  It's easy to obsess over, especially for people like you and me who like to feel some control.

  • I had an ultrasound at my first appointment but it was at 9 weeks. They will do a urine test and get your background info. I already knew my OB so I didn't do a lot of interviewing/asking questions I guess. We discussed what I needed to take for vitamins and she asked if I was reading any books, etc. it has been a while and I have had a lot of appointments since then so they start to blend. I always have lots of little questions.
  • Honestly, I'm surprised they're seeing you this early.  I think my OB waited until 10.5+ weeks before our initial appointment.  Then, it was just as speedy described.

If you know where you are moving, I suggest looking for an OB there, now.  You don't want to be stuck without one when you're that far along.

  • Oh and have a GREAT first appointment!
  • My first appt was u/s, full medical history (DH included) pee in a cup and blood work.  They also gave me other pregnancy related information.  They did tell me I would have an u/s, and tried an abdominal but couldn't see anything, so I guess I wasn't "warned" about the vaginal but at least I knew it was a possibility.  Warn your DH if he's going with you!  Write down any questions you want to ask.  Good luck!  It will be great!

  • I didn't go for my first appt until I was 9 weeks, but they did an internal to date the pregnancy since I was on BC before the BFP, so I had no clue when I may have ovulated.

They did a pap and a history. They went over dos/don'ts, gave me a bunch of PNV samples, and information on what to expect for the rest of the pregnancy.

  • BTW- I cried during the U/S at my first appointment. The "this is getting really real" thing hit me kind of hard then :)
  • I didn't get an u/s that early but they did do a quick internal just to make sure my uterus was the right size for how far along I was.  It was very quick, nothing to stress about.

i am SO doing this next time. great advice, jenni.

  • Don't get too excited. Our first apt wasn't much. The nurse "scolded" us on coming in before 13 weeks, and they didn't take a full medical history. Basically it was an empathetic nod when I talked about morning sickness. (I actually really liked my doctor, clinic, and even the nurse... the apt just wasn't anything like the books say).

We had an ultrasound at 5 wks, but it was to check for ectopic pregnancy. (and not at the doctor's apt). It's not standard. You'll get one around 18-20 wks. No heartbeat on the doppler until about 13 wks.

  • My first appt. was at 6 weeks and they did ... PG confirmation by pee test, urine check for UTIs, weight, BP, full medical history, bloodwork for STDs & immunities.  The practices here don't have u/s machines in house, so you don't get an u/s unless you need one for dating purposes, spotting, history of loss, etc.

    GL today, Bug!

  • Our OB office does early ultrasounds to date the pregnancy, although not all do.  You wouldn't hear the hb this early, but you would see it flicker on the screen (assuming you aren't earlier than you think).   If this person won't be delivering your baby, I wouldn't bother asking about birth related questions, I'd just ask what to expect of the next few months, which tests they recommend and why.  I'd also start looking into your provider for July now, esp if you want a midwife, and see if you can get on their schedule where you are moving. Good luck!!
  • Everyone else has answered your questions so I'm just going to say good luck!  Even if you don't have an ultrasound the first appointment still makes it feel a lot more real.

I agree with finding a new ob now. I tried to find one when pg with Seth to see me starting at 18ish weeks and lots already were full for my due date! I did find one but didn't deliver with them bc I ended up moving back in time (long story, I temp moved to finish school) and I'm glad I didn't bc I didn't really like them but they were my only option. So you don't want that to happen, ESP if you have no choice but to deliver with them!
