Sewing your own CDs

Has anyone done this? How about from a store-bought pattern?

My mom is always looking for things to sew for me. So she found a cloth diaper pattern, with AIOS, fitteds and covers. I'm a bit skeptical, I admit -- baby isn't here yet, and I don't want her to invest the time into sewing diapers for me that may not even work since I have no idea how they'd fit. (And I'd rather use Kissaluvs or something when she's a newborn anyway.)

I'm probably going to pick up a few at the consignment shop so I can bring them to her to see what they look like, since I know she's never seen a newer cloth diaper in person. I suspect if she makes them we'd need to make some fit alterations.

  • that sounds like the Jalie pattern, which i use and HIGHLY recommend. I have made fitteds for a newborn (sooo cute) and pockets for infant/toddler. They work as well as, if not better than BumGenius. I haven't tried the covers or AIO patterns out yet. There is a video on youtube that shows how to make the pocket/AIO diapers, and i recommend she watch it. Also, you might start with the fitteds first, as you can use scrap flannel or other cheap fabric. The PUL for the others is a bit pricier, but still more economical than buying new diapers. I recommend KidsintheGarden.com to purchase the pattern, fabrics and notions.

  • That's really helpful, thanks! She'd found a Kwik-Sew pattern, but I'll send her a link to the Jalie one, as well.

The flannel and stuff is definitely cheap... I know she found diaper flannel for under 6/yd. But I think having her get her hands on things will help with visualization as well.

I don't sew more than straight seams myself, so I'd have to leave the alterations and such up to her... but I know she can pretty much do whatever I want. She has... an insane number of machines, including a babylock and a serger, so I'll bet she could duplicate kissaluvs for me, too.

I think I'm leaning towards pockets and fitteds anyway.

  • you don't have to use specific flannel for newborn diapers. I just buy  remnants of thick cotton flannel and use it, with cotton or hemp terry for the hidden soaker. I've also made some fitteds with flannel or knit for the outside, and microterry for the inside. Also, for the pockets, I like to make my inserts out of hemp terry. I make them two layers serged together into a 4 or 5" wide x 25" strip. (smaller for newborn or small infant) That can be folded 1-3 times into a nice absorbent insert. I'd personally stick to fitteds or prefolds for newborns as it is more cost effective, since the pockets are sized and would be outgrown quickly. It would be nice to have a few i guess for out & about though.
