Diva Cup for Menstrual Period?? TMI

So I was just looking at Kelly's Closet and I wasn't going to get anything but I was looking under the eco-friendly menstrual care because I was curious (but I don't think I could EVER do reusable menstrual pads!  Although I never thought I would be cleaning CD's either and I am)  Anyway I came across the diva cup.  It seems really strange but really if it does work as well as it says it does, it doesn't seem like it would be much messier from putting in a tampon, and it does seem like a waste after all the effort I put into CDing to be putting so many pads into landfills anyway.  So just curious, anyone use one or know anyone who has?  Anyone have any feedback??

Re: Diva Cup for Menstrual Period?? TMI

  • I am planning on using one after I deliver, but I haven't used it yet.  A lot of my gf's use them and have great things to say (including less cramps from the chemicals in tampons!).

(BTW - I will be using regular "disposable" pads PP - I don't think tampons or diva cups are an option then).

  • hmmm... I think there are a couple of people that have used them here, or on the other eco board on the nest... all the reviews I've seen are good.  I was looking into it a before I was pg w/ dd, and might look into it again once AF returns.

  • Oh, the most recent Mothering Magazine has a big article about reusable menstrual products.  I haven't quite read it yet; but it does look like it has a lot of material.
  • There are a lot of people on here who use them. I have never heard anyone who tried it not like it. I just started using mine a couple of weeks ago and was impressed. I need to work on getting a more comfortable position, but it worked great! SOO much nicer than worrying about leaking through tampons or shifting pads. I particularly liked how easy it was at night with getting up to BF DD. I could put it in and ignore it all night, even getting up and down, whereas pads were a huge mess for that long.

  • love, love, love it. I started using it after DS was born... so maybe a year-ish ago and can't imagine how I survived w/out it. Super comfortable, holds a lot (even w/ heavy flow days I can go all day w/out emptying- at most I do it when I shower in the am and then before going to bed). If I'm remembering right, it holds .5 ounces and your entire cycle is about 2 ounces so you won't fill it up often- though I think they say you should clean it every 12 hours. I love not having to worry about buying new boxes of tampons, I love being able to leave it in for longer on heavy days (so much better than having to worry if I have a tampon in the diaper bag and check my watch to see if I need to find a bathroom during work/play dates). Plus, I haven't had any leaks or anything, so that's great too. So basically, I highly recommend it :)

  • I have a LadyCup (similar to a DivaCup... I found a two-cup package deal on ebay) and it's fabulous. I decided on the LadyCup because it was a little shorter than the Diva and came in pretty colors.... I had to perform a little surgery and trim the stem on it, but that's pretty common.

They're a little intimidating when you first get them. Don't let it freak you out with the size.

But it's super super comfy. No leaks (except for once when I let it get overfull or didn't put it in right) and a bit messy to take out at first, but you feel so much cleaner with them. Seriously.

I will say that, uh, TMI, but I can definitely fill up a cup. My cycle is NOT light (and was irregular before I got pregnant.)  If you have a heavy flow you'll be a bit paranoid for a while and may have to empty a little more often.

  • Thanks so much!  It's great to hear such good reviews!  I really wanted to try it, but was a bit nervous!  Maybe I'll order that along with my diaper sprayer...DH is not going to be happy with all my purchases this week ;-)

  • I use a MoonCup which is the same thing but a different brand. It is great but I would not say it is as mess-free as a tampon. There's a big learning curve and it can be pretty messy at that point but once you get it down its only maybe slightly messier than a tampon, not really a big enough difference to deter me from using it at all. I also really liked using it PP as it seemed to sort of help me a bit with the pain from my tearing/scar, almost like PT, haha.
  • I used it, but pre-baby so I'm not quite sure what will happen after.  I'm assuming I won't have any problems!  There is a learning curve, but I loved it after getting used to it.  The big thing for me was to not use the fold it has on the package.  Ouch!  Here's a website of different folds.  I use the oragami.  Find what works best for you!  GL!

  • I have used one and will again when I have a cycle.

    I *LOVE* it.

I have read that it takes some getting use to putting it in to use it, so I 'practiced' before my cycle.  I figured that was better than messing with it when I needed it.
