Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Newborn hasn't pooped in 5 days!

I had my baby last Friday March 19th. He passed all the meconium and had about 1 BM a day for 3 days. Now he hasn't had a BM since Wednesday. I have been breastfeeding and supplementing with formula since he is jaundiced. That is another reason I'm so concerned that hes not pooping...he has no way to clear out the billirubin. We have tried karo syrup, warm butt baths, inserting a rectal thermometer, moving his legs doing bicycles etc. I'm beyond nervous/scared/frustrated. Thank God we have a doctors appointment tomorrow! Anyone else go through this?

Re: Newborn hasn't pooped in 5 days!

  • DD had poop issues when she was on Enfamil A+ and Nestle GoodStart... we put her on Heinz, and no more poop issues! (plus she didn't scream bloody murder like she did on Similac....). I think it has something to do with the iron content in the formula.

This might sound weird, but have you tried putting him in the swing? Some babies tend to poop a lot easier when they're relaxed... DD poops easier when she's eating, but she LOVES to poop when she's in the jumperoo (not something I would recommend for one as young as yours!!!). A lot of other mommies find that their LO's seem to poop while in the swing... worth a try, right?

  • O didn't poop for almost a week! Our Pedi said it was okay as long as he was still having wets. Good luck it will happen soon! and when it does it will be the happiest day of your life. Who knew poop could be such a big concern? Smile
  • our pedi said to put 1 oz of apple prune juice (from the baby aisle at the store) in a bottle mixed with their milk/formula and feed it to them. and if that didnt work (it did) after 2 days, to take a q tip with KY jelly on it and lightly put it inside to stimulate.
  • This just happened to DS but he was in obvious discomfort. I made sure I nursed him a lot more often and reduced the amount of formula bottles he got. It helped him. I was/am supplementing with Similac Sensitive due to reflux but now DS only gets a max of 4oz of formula a day if any at all. My pedi said to get the glycerin tablets for infants or children. It worked like a charm and he hasn't had a problem since!

  • My pedi said to use molasses, about 1/2 t in a bottle and it worked great. Better than the Karo syrup too.
