3rd Trimester

Does this mean anything?

For the last couple weeks I've been waking up with crusty spots on my shirt... lately it's been getting "worse" (not that it's a bad thing, just the spots are getting bigger).  I know it's normal to leak in the 3rd trimester, but I was wondering if there's any correlation between breast leakage and the ability to breastfeed or at least how quickly milk comes in.  Does anyone know?

  • It's just something that happens.  It happened a lot in my first pregnancy and almost not at all this one.  I don't think it indicates your ability to breastfeed or not to breastfeed.

  • I don't think that it means that you can breastfeed or not. It's just your body preparing itself.

  • it means nothing....all milk comes in at different times. i'd go out and get some breast pads before you start leaking during the day!

Good call - DH is getting pretty pissed that I'm leaking "breast juice" all over his undershirts (which are all I can fit in for pajama tops!)

  • I've heard that if you do start leaking before the baby comes, it could mean you will have an easier time breastfeeding, but if you don't leak at all, that doesn't necessarily mean you'll have a difficult time. All depends on how the baby takes to it! I know a lady who said her milk didn't come in until a week after she had the baby, so it made it difficult for her in the beginning.

  • I don't think it means anything... last pregnancy I didn't leak at all and had an easy time with breastfeeding...this time I've been leaking since the first trimester but I had only stopped breastfeeding 5 mths ago.

I had a friend last pregnancy who leaked during third trimester and had a hard time with her milk, she didn't produce enough so I don't think there any correlation.

  • what it does mean is that your breast can physically produce milk- which is a good thing.  Whether they will produce enough, or LO will take well to latch etc.   Has more to do with with you do when the time arrives....

This could be completely wrong- but at our prenatal class the nurse told us that the key to being able to breast feed an do it successfully is to make sure the first couple of days- when it is really brutual that you just don't give up.  She said on day 2 the baby feeds every hour- which is exhausting and when most people give up.  But if you push threw that then you shouldn't have any issues with milk production.   the other thing to remember is that BF requires a mom to be relaxed and I think that is hard for a lot of women post delivery.  All of my friends who are "worriers" really struggled to feed...

  • No,  I have had no leaking durring either pregnancy and I could have fed 5 kids when I was bf'ing ds.  I assume I will probably have the same experience this time with the lactating but, we'll see.

  • There is no correlation. Your body starts producing colostrum about now, and thats what you're leaking, it doesn't mean your milk will come in any quicker. Milk should come in 3-5days after birth.
  • I hope not because I plan on breast feeding and my breast have yet to do leak other than when I shower.
