Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Meat/Finger food

So DD has been on table foods exclusively at home for about 2 wks (she still gets jarred baby food at daycare when she goes there 2 days a week) and we've tried a lot of different fruits and veggies, some pasta and rice, and toast.  But I've been hesitant to give her meat due to my fears of her choking on it.  What do you give for meat? And how do you give it? I would like to get her exposed to the taste and texture and I feel it is important for the iron and protein.

Ideas, please?  Thx!

Re: Meat/Finger food

  • Anything made in the crock pot is the best consistency for babies. DS loves pulled pork! We've also tried pot roast, meatballs, chicken, etc. Canned chicken (like canned tuna) is also a good place to start.

  • Do u serve those meats plain, without seasonings?  Like the pulled pork and meatballs?

  • Nope...I give DS exactly what we're eating...the pulled pork had a BBQ sauce, the meatballs had a little marinara, the pot roast had a wine sauce, etc...I want him to get used to eating things how we prepare them...so far, everything has been a hit!

  • I make baby turkey meatballs. It has carrot and apple purees. The last ones, I made with oatmeal and wheat germ, no bread crumbs. She loves them and they bake up nice and soft. It's supposed to be a turkey meatloaf, but I made them in balls and they freeze and reheat great!

  • I give grilled chicken (I just pull it apart with my fingers), ground beef, beef roast, salmon . . . .

I've also thrown chicken into the crockpot and it gets SUPER tender -- pretty much falling apart on its own.  You could try that first, see how it goes, and then move on from there if she seems to be ready.
