Preemies

Preemie vs. full-term vent

DD was born at 35 weeks and weighed 6lbs 6oz.  DS was just born at 41 weeks and weighed 8lbs 14oz.  I cannot tell you how many people have said, "well, that's what happens when you have a boy."  Yes.  Because the 6 week difference in utero made absolutely not difference.

Sorry to complain about something so petty; it is just something that has occurred several times now and I find it really, really irritating .  My son is seriously at the same level developmentally and physically my daughter was at three months.  I just wish people wouldn't be so naive.

Re: Preemie vs. full-term vent

  • Sorry that irritates you. I've come to realize most of the talk comes from lack of experience. Without knowing what it's like to have a preemie people just say things to fill the void without really thinking. I try really hard to let things slide off my back now that I have a preemie and try not to let comparisons get to me since most people mean well. Some days I do a good job, others I have to speak up and set them straight.

  • I am confused about what is bothering you. 6lbs 6ozs sounds small, but nothing extreme. I think people are just saying that boys tend to be bigger than girls.
  • Oh well just ignore them. People say dumb things. Chances are he would have been bigger anyway even if she were born a couple weeks later full-term, lol :) 6lbs 6oz is a very good size!

  • Oh.  Is that what happens when you have a boy?  Because my 38 week girl weighed in at 7 lbs.  My 35 week boy weighed in at 3 lbs, 7 oz.

What would they make of us?  Hmm?

Sorry.  Some people just need to be knocked in the head sometimes, yk?

AGREE!! My 34 week boy weighed 5lbs and my 39 week daughter was 6lbs 13oz. Not a huge difference but still!

Try not to let it bother you though. Some people just don't think before they speak and especially those who have no experience with preemies.
