3rd Trimester

People faking contractions?!?!!?

So I had been in the hospital almost 2 weeks ago for contractions. After spending four days there I got to know one of the nurses well and we talked about various things she sees through the maternity ward. Well one thing she said that is extremely common is people come in faking contractions in order to get their labor induced. Some of these women are 35+ weeks pregnant! I asked her how in the world can someone fake a contraction and the Dr. not be able to tell. She said that some women tighten their tummy on their own and make a pattern on the monitor! The Dr. ends up coming in, sees that its time-able contractions and lets the mother "labor." Please tell me that this is not true! I can't believe this! How does a Dr. not know the difference! Wouldn't the women not be dilating because her body is not ready yet? Have any of you heard of this before? So crazy!

Re: People faking contractions?!?!!?

  • I've never heard of anyone doing this, but who in their right mind would try to trick the docs!!!  It is extremely selfish of them to try and get LO out of there before he/she is ready!  That's crazy!

  • My MIL is a L&D nurse and she has told me all kinds of crazy stories - including stories just like that one.  It's bizarre.  My question is, wouldn't the lady who's faking the contrax get tired of it and eventually stop? How would they keep the pattern going? And WHY would a Dr give pitocin or any other inducing drug if not medically necessary?
  • Indifferent WOW! They're in for a treat when they realize having a LO requires patience.

Exactly! It really makes you wonder about some Dr.s! I just don't understand the thought process of that, they would really have to take the time to make them even time-able! I honestly don't get it!

  • thats insane!!  wtf!? That has to be obvious if she isn't dilating....maybe he just lets em labor cuz he's annoyed and they're wasting their time.  I've never heard of something like this! Too bad tightening your tummy muscles and such couldn't make you dilate and go into labor haha  I'd be so workin it!

LOL I'm full term and WISH he was ready now...but I know he probably isn't.  It is sad...I hope these women have long hard labors!  Then they'll really feel it!  Hope that didn't sound too mean...

  • Crazy! And, I don't get how it would work.  I went into L&D at 36wks with false labor.  I was having very regular painful contractions but they were not causing me to dialate.  I was given pain meds and sent home.  I went in again at 38wks with bleeding. Again, I was having very regular/ every 5 mins contractions, but was not dialating more.  Again, I was sent home.  Contractions by themselves don't mean anything so I don't get how this would do them any good.

I don't understand it either! I was in at 33 almost 34 weeks and was contracting every 8 minutes and they shot me up with everything possible until my contractions slowed down. Then they checked me and I was 1cm 50% effaced, gave me more meds but still sent me home and on bed rest! So even with me dilating I was still sent home! So I honestly don't get this one bit!

  • Wow! I had never heard that before... How stupid and as a PP said... How selfish!!!

  • Actually all it takes to set off the contraction machine is to tap the pink one wrapped around you lol. I was hooked up to the machine for an NST at 36 weeks and I was having contractions every 3-4 minutes that were slight but when I was filling out the clipboard I hit the pink contraction timer with it on accident and my husband said it set it off.. the nurse even came in and was like oh my you just had a big one I was like no sorry I hit it on accident lol...

Good thing my hospital only lets you labor if you're dilating as well :)

  • I had contractions for 3 days...3 minutes apart and never dilated more than 1 cm.  I had failure to progress with my DD and ended up with a c-section.  I have a playtapoid pelvis which makes it almost impossible for the baby engage in my birth canal and push on my cervix so no, never dilated even with constant contractions.  Same thing with DS although I was a scheduled csection and went into labor at 38 weeks.

I would hope someone doesn't do this but it is possible to contract and not dilate although not common.

  • Wow, I've never heard of this.  I couldn't imagine anyone doing this.  That's desparation at its finest.  I guess I don't understand why people are in such a hurry to have their baby born.
  • that totally sucks.  but it would be easy to fake out the monitors
  • I've never heard of this but somehow I'm not surprised. I would just think it wouldn't work to fake out a machine, but what do I know.
