Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Frantic eating, crying 8+ hours, sleeping only 8-10 hours . . .

I'm at a complete loss.  DD has been fussy from the start.  But now she is a crazy baby when eating -- moving around wildly, pulling off after just a few minutes.  I've thought about a strong let-down, but I express some milk beforehand and don't think that is the cause of the problem.  She has been grunting while feeding and almost wants to stand up straight afterwards.  We can't get her to bend at the waist to be burped.

She cries upwards of 8-9 hours a day -- in a bloody murder scream.  And is really only sleeping maybe 8-10 hours.

I don't know what to do.  I have an appointment on Wednesday and have already been eliminating milk from my diet.

Anything I should be doing or anyone experiencing this?

ditto!!  this happened with dd#1 and we wound up having to put her on prevacid.  she also had really severe projevtile spit up!

  • I was going to ditto the pp although I have no experience.  Just sounds like reflux...

  • Ditto the others, sounds exactly like reflux.  Lanie started taking medicine around 4 weeks and after a couple of weeks I saw an improvement.  Also I was given good advice regarding their weight and medicine.  If you notice it stops working it could be b.c they need to go up in their dose.  Now at 3 months she is very rarely fussy and is such a good baby.

Ugh, I use to have to hold her all the time when she was little b.c she would scream if she wasn't upright.

  • I agree, reflux.  Especially the "standing up" part.  DS would stiffen in the middle of feedings, or soon afterward, from the pain.  So sad.

It took some experimenting to get the right med and dosage.  Our pediatrician perscribed Axid first, which did nothing.  I found out later that, at least in this area, it is protocol to perscribe Axid first b/c it is FDA approved for use in babies.  Our insurance wouldn't pay for anything else unless we tried Axid first and showed it didn't work.  Then we went to Prilosec, which seems to have helped a great deal.  DS is still a bit of a fussy, demanding baby, but part of that may just be his temperament.  Things a LOT better on medication, though.  He has longer periods of happy time (which were nearly non-existent before).

GL, and just bear in mind that you may have to try a few different things before you see marked improvement.

  • I am going through this right now and I can feel your pain! We're almost at the end of our 2wks with Zantac and I can't see a difference. DS hardly sleeps during the day and when he does, it's for 20 min at a time. Some things to help until you get the dosage right (assuming it is reflux), elevate her crib or pnp so she's sitting upright more, keep her upright over your shoulder for at least 30 min when she's done eating, try to feed her more upright (if giving a bottle) and eat less but more frequent.

Also something to watch out for, we switched DS's formula (for when he gets bottles) just before his diagnosis to Similac Sensitive and I was told to add rice to it. Well, between the two things, he got constipated so throw that into the mix and we've had a tough few weeks here. DS is now having more frequent poopy diapers so he is feeling better that way but I'm still not seeing a difference with the Zantac.

It really is difficult to listen to them cry in pain!

  • WOW>...I just posted about this..but didnt see this post! DD#2 is having the same problem. Though she cries for 12 hours! ughhhh talk about being sleep deprived. poor girl is in soo much pain. Ive been reading about reflux...But DD#2 doesnt spit up that much..or vomit too often. Could she still be experiencing pain..the pain seems to be more in her tummy then heart burn in her chest. From what I read the acid comes back up the esophogus (sp) which causes the spit up and pain..But she does like you mentioned...doesnt want to bend at the waist..if I even touch her tummy she screams even LOUDER..which i didnt even think was possible.

The pedi's Ive talked to (3 different ones) havent mentioned anything to me about it..and havent really helped. I switched to soy formula on my moms advice b/c my family has a milk sensitivity. Though I havent seen much of a difference. but its only been a day.

Im at a loss...and VERY VERY TIRED!

  • Agree it sounds like reflux. I would try and get baby in on Monday. It sounds like DD is in pain and that should be addressed as soon as possible, especially since reflux meds can take a while to kick in.

I hope it gets better soon!
