Re: moving to Portland area... need help!

  • Where about in Portland will your husband be working? Beaverton is a great place to live as far as safety and schools. Beaverton has some of the best schools depending on the area you move to, and the commute to Portland isn't bad either. If you are wanting to live in Portland, areas of SE are nice. Schools in Portland aren't as good though. They have had a lot of budget cuts. Lake Oswego is also very nice, but spendy. Let me know if you have specific questions! I have lived here my whole life so I, at least like to think, that I know quite a bit about the areas around here. :)

  • I'm not sure where about you are looking, but Gresham is a really nice area.. The Gresham/Barlow school districts are really good and it's safe, plus it is a great location, close to a lot of shopping and dining.

  • My DH will be working all over the Portland area... also having to travel up to Seattle every once in a while... so we can live pretty much anywhere in the area. Thank you for the advice about Beaverton... I've heard good things about that too... I'll also need an OBGYN... do you have any suggestions?

  • The Portland area offers a lot of diversity of housing from rural to suburban to urban.  It really depends if you're looking for a lot of space or new construction or an older house or what.  Maybe this website will help you narrow it down: https://www.portlandbridges.com/portland-neighborhoods/.  I live near Ladd's Addition in SE.  We love it because we have a neighborhood for the kids, we can walk to restaurants, and DH can bike to work in 10 minutes.

I used Lara Williams at Everywoman's Health.  She was the most progressive OB I could find, and I liked how small Emanuel Hospital was while still having a high-level NICU.  https://www.everywomanshealth.org/

  • I live in the Beaverton/Tigard area near Washington Square mall.  We love the neighborhood and the schools are pretty good.
  • We used to live in SE Portland in the Creston-Kenilworth neighborhood. That area, Ladd's addition, Woodstock, Sellwood, and a few other neighborhoods in that area closer to Hawthorne and Belmont are really nice. It will only take about 10 minutes to get to downtown Portland, and you have pretty easy access to I-5 to get to Seattle as well. There are some great NE Portland neighborhoods as well.

We live in Tigard near Washington Square as well and like it a lot.

  • Sounds like Beaverton would be a good fit for you. LOL, it's not where I'd like to live (we're not suburb folk), but I think it's what you are looking for.

SW Portland is another place to look at (Hillsdale, Multnomah Villiage, West Slope...) It's near Tigard. It's Portland, but it doesn't have a city feel. Good schools, safe, quite, upper-class neighborhoods, curved streets, etc. The area is a little more established than the suburbs and very convenient to downtown. I used to live in SW Portland and have thought it would be great to move back to with a family.

  • I have a rec for an OB!  Dr. Jenna Murray at Bridgeview Women's Clinic is AWESOME.  She just delivered my daughter 8 weeks ago and I could not be more pleased.  She delivers at Good Samaritan Hospital downtown.

    Best of luck with everything!!

  • If i were you, i'd rent somewhere first -- maybe Beaverton.  Then you can decide for yourself what area.  I live in Tigard, we wanted to look in NW portland, but the property taxes in Multnomah county are higher than in washington county.  Anyway, it really depends on what your tastes are. If you like the older houses with charm, look in NE or SE portland.  The westside, is typically newer houses, lots of new subdivisions, just depends on your taste.  Portland school districts are suffering from budget issues -- i have heard great things about the Tualatin/Sherwood school district, you might want to look there too.

  • I would look at SW Portland, Lake Oswego, Tigard and Beaverton. I hesitate to add Beaverton, because I don't like it much, to be honest. However, it sounds like it might be a good fit for you. I have to say though, if you look at Beaverton, stay away from Aloha. While Beaverton might have okay schools, Aloha has the worst. The two cities are attached and many people try to list Aloha housing as Beaverton. Anyway, just putting my two cents in there.

Personally, I would be looking at SW Portland and Sellwood neighborhoods, but I don't like the burbs.

    GL!!

  • We moved here a year and a half ago from Oklahoma. At first we rented in SW Portland, about 5 minutes from downtown. We moved to Beaverton 6 months after we got here. We actually live on the edge of Beaverton, very close to Hillsboro. I love this side of town. It is very similar to Oklahoma, except more beautiful and there are a ton of things to do. I'm not sure about the schools because my son is only 3.
