This.
ours is on all the time. Like pp said I like it for background noise even if we aren't watching it. I gotta be honest though, I never watch anything I want to watch- it is always on PBS or PBS Kids or PBS Sprout. Now that it is getting nicer out, we are outside more so he won't be exposed to TV as much.
But I am not cutting it out all together, I remember when I was growing up I had a cousin who wasn't allowed to watch TV, and to be honest, she was odd. And when she would come over to play, she would never want to play- she just wanted to watch my parents TV- since she never got to. It wasn't much fun.
I've heard that too about it doesn't help with language, etc. But eh, I don't worry about that too much. In all honesty, my kid is the 3rd generation in our family who has grown up with a SAHM who keeps the TV on all day. LOL!
I've told my parent and ILs that I was worried about having the TV on too much, they all laughed because DH's grandfather was a TV repairman and his grandmother had the TV on all day, so my MIL grew up with it, same with my mom and dad.....same with me and my husband- my mom kept it on all the time, for Sesame Street, Mr Rogers, then she'd watch her soaps. So far we've all turned out OK.
?
This! ?Plus, I was raised this way. ?To this day my Mom usually has 2 TV's on. ??
Never- maybe twice a day. while she is awake. She usually watches one episode of Blues Clues which is like 23 minutes. And then the world news is usually on after dinner while we are cleaning up the toys and getting ready for bed.
After she is in bed- DH has it on until we go to bed. Which i hate.
This, if DH is home, but not during the day. The guy constantly turns it on "for noise", then leaves the room. As if we don't have enough "noise" with 2 dogs, 2 cats, and a toddler running around.
If DD had it her way it would be. She gets completely mesmerized with the thing. Sometimes I let her watch Sesame Street, but that's the only time it's really on. Plus we don't have cable, so there's only about two channels that we can watch.
I know what you mean about background noise though. On most days I like to listen to books on CDs (free from the library!) or podcasts (free from iTunes).
DD watches two episodes of Elmo's World on DVD while I shower and at and DH and I watch from 8-10:00 at night if there are good shows on network TV. Since we don't have cable, anything that I'd have on wouldn't be good TV anyway. I actually think I'd find the "background" noise annoying with all the extra kid noise.
With one I was like that. I had the news on almost all the time. Now, with two, I only have it on until 9:00 and then I won't turn it back on until 3:30 or 4:00 depending on when we all get sick of each other. I throw on a Sesame Street DVD and it gives me a little break in the afternoon.
DH and I will watch a show or two a week after the kids go to bed, but it's very rare in general now that we watch anything.
I love silence! I can't understand wanting the TV on just for the noise.
The boys watch TV shows, and when I feel they've had enough, I'll turn to a classical music channel. That way the baby has no motivation to keep turning the TV back on once I've turned it off.
We don't have a tv on the main floor of our house. We have one in our bedroom (which is on the second floor) and one in the basement. But even if we did have one in the living room, it would not be on during the day. DH leaves it on for background noise and I hate that. First of all, I like quiet and secondly, it's a waste of electricity. I do like to listen to music and I have an under the counter mounted CD player w/ an adapter for my iPod in the kitchen and I put that on a few times a week during the day.
Ours is on all day. I leave it on PBS until 5, when BBC news comes on, then I change to the local news, then my primetime shows.
DD has consistently been WAY ahead on language development, and it's not like she sits there and watches the shows, anyway. She pays attention to the opening song, then goes back to what she was doing. We also read A TON of books every day, play dollhouse, go outside on nice days, etc.
Ours is on most of the day but a lot of the time it is on the kids music channel. We have directv and so we have the Sirius music channels on the tv. They usually watch 2-3 episodes of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse throughout the day.
I guess I use the music as background noise but both DD and DS love it and love to dance. Even when we are playing in their rooms their radios/CD player is on.
Nope. The TV in the playroom isn't hooked up to cable. Only plays DVD's. The girls are allowed to watch when L goes for his nap.
I don't watch any TV until all the kids are asleep.
I watch Good Morning America in the AM in about an hour bc I Tivo it and then other than that the TV is off unless DD is watching her 1 hr of Sesame Street while I cook/clean (and this is only maybe 3 times a week). Other than that the TV is off until she is in bed. My mom has the TV on all day at her house and the constant noise kind of drives me nuts- and I just feel "icky" having the TV on all day for some reason.
To be fair, we really aren't home all day either- we usually have an outing in the am until lunch, then we have lunch, usually play then it's nap time. (I work from home- so usually work during her nap time- so no TV for me). After nap, we have a couple of hours where DD usually draws, plays outside, we take a walk or go to the park, run an errand or prep dinner. Then it's pretty much time for dinner, then another half hour or so then bed. I really don't know when I'd find time to watch TV.
