J.O.'s Food Revolution

I know this was discussed the other night when it first aired, but they replayed it tonight and I just saw it. I just have to say how impressed I was with the cafeteria cook when she clearly didn't think what he was doing was going to work, but she bit her tongue and said "We said we would give this a shot so we'll give this a shot," or something like that. So professional.

  • I watched the first episode tonight on hulu. I think that was the second episode that aired today, right?

  • I am watching the first episode right now, the second epi airs in 45 minutes here.  It makes me sad.  I wonder when kids stop eating fruit and veggies or if they never did from the start?

I am convinced that 2 of my cousins are so picky and won't eat any veg and hardly any fruit is because my aunt.  When they were babies she'd offer them carrots (or what ever) and they'd spit it out and she'd never try again and just say they don't like carrots and told them for the next 20 years "you don't like carrots" thus...they don't like carrots.  She, her H and 2 kids all have huge weight issues.

  • I felt really bad when I was watching it.  I was sitting there eating chicken nuggets and canned peas.

But DD LOVES tomatoes, bell pepper, corn on the cob...just about any vegetable, so I guess I'm doing okay.

  • It made me sick but hopeful. To whoever hasn't watched it yet - there is a godawful chicken demonstration. If you have a queasy stomach, walk out of the room for a couple of minutes.

It made me incredibly sad that the kids couldn't even identify a tomato or a potato.

  • The chicken experiment also made me queasy. I figured out what they meant my "rib meat".

I don't ever want to eat a chicken nugget again!  It was pretty sad that the kids still wanted to eat it.

    Okay, that terrifies me.

  • it's appalling how many kids couldn't i.d. a tomato.  and the chicken experiment was disgusting, but that is one major reason i don't eat chicken nuggets  :shudder:

i just don't even understand how kids to the point where french fries are their main veggie.  can't even fathom it.

  • I teach kindergarten and every year I have at least a couple of kids who cant ID tomato or potato. It's more common then you think. I think its because they eat them but in a chopped up form or already processed. I dont think some kids ever help their kids in the kitchen either.

    That still makes me sad.

I guess that I've gotten spoiled living so close to a co-op and farmer's markets. DD helps me pick out fresh produce. She also helps me 'cook' - she gets her own apron, bowl and spoon, and some pretend food.

Emma does the same thing, kel!  it just makes me so sad that there are 6 year old eating nothing but processed crap :(  she LOVES to feel the texture of avocados and we do colors when we pick out fruits.  sigh
