Breastfeeding

HELP! Need Advice.

My baby is 9 days old.  My milk came in at day 3 and the ped says baby and I are doing great and my daughter gained 3 ounces since hospital discharge.  My question is this...The last 2 days I feel like all I have been doing is feeding my baby.  I will finish nursing her and hand her off to my MIL or DH and she instantly starts rooting around to eat more.  This is after I have nursed her for 45 minutes.  I have checked and I still have milk but is this a growth spurt or something?  My nippies are on fire from all of the nursing.

 Thanks for your help.

  • Yup, if I remember right, there is a growth spurt right around 10 days... hang in there and keep nursing!

This.  Just keep nursing.  It will get better!

  • Yeap, I often spent an hour or more nursing her in the early days. Sometimes I would even have to go back to the breast I started with or do them both twice!!

The first weeks it seems like all you do is nurse, nurse, nurse and yes, my nipples were on fire from all the nursing. I was so sore, but it gets better with time and as you get more comfortable with the latching on and off process.

  • Thanks everyone.  My MIL mentioned buying us formula if we wanted to switch her but I told her breast is best and I will keep on nursing until the ped tells me I should change.

(going to go get ice for the nippies)

  • That's normal.  At that time I felt like he was attached to my boob permanently.  Relax, read a book, watch a movie and just enjoy it.

  • It can be annoying, but it's good for your supply and for you both to get comfortable with the whole nursing thing.

  • Totally normal. You sound like you have a good attitude about it and like everyone said just keep nursing. Enjoy this time with him and catch up on a movie or DVR'd shows.

  • This is normal.  Do you have some Lansinoh or other nipple cream?  I used it after every nursing, it was the only thing that saved my nips.

  • I remember this - it was overwhelming. Hang in there! There is a light - - now my son (7.5 months) eats for about 7-8 minutes on a side and that is it!

As long as you are having good wet and dirty diapers I didn't worry! One thing that helped me was going to a LC who could determine how much milk he was getting in a feeding. It reassured me that he was getting enough milk!

  • Also keep in mind that babies digest BM a lot quicker than formula, therefore they need to feed more often.
