(Fetal Fibronectin) Has anyone ever had this test done, and if so what are your thoughts on it?Or if anyone has heard anything about it (positive or negative). I'm contemplating having it done because I am high-risk (pregnant with identical twins) but I was hoping to get some feedback before making my final decision. Thanks!
Re: fFN Test
You won't be able to have it done until after week 23 I believe (because the fetal fibronectin is present till that point regardless).
I have a shortening cervix so I requested the test at 24 weeks. Mine was positive and I was giving the steroid shots for the boys lungs.
I have since had it done and gotten negatives at 25, 28, and 30 weeks. My last one will be at 32 weeks.
For me a negative was very reassuring and the positive was terrifying. I felt like a time bomb for those 2 weeks. I don't know if you are aware but a positive means there is a 30% chance of early delivery and a negative means that there is less than a 1% chance.
I know there are risks associated with identical twins- is preterm labor one of them?
I had FFN tests starting around 24 weeks. I always felt like it was reassuring getting a negative. However, I had a negative around 30 weeks and went into pre-term labor around 31 weeks. Luckily they were able to stop the labor with procardia. I asked a doctor about it since I had gotten a negative - I didn't really get a good answer. She just said, well you didn't actually deliver. My thought was, but I probably would have if not for the procardia! When I was in L&D, they had an anesthesiologist and neonatologist come by because they were convinced I was going to have the babies that night.
Not trying to discourage the FFN because I always looked forward to getting them and getting negatives, but after my experience, not sure how confident I feel in them.
