They happen here but I don't know how common they are. Regardless they're always small (close friends and family), and it's more seen if #2 is going to be a different sex.

Instead of a shower, we had a 'sprinkle' for a woman at work expecting #2. We gathered for brunch and gave her some diapers, wipes and baby stuff (diaper cream, soap, etc.). It was nice - I thought it was a cute idea.
I've basically just seen them for when there is either a big age difference between baby 1 and 2, different sex baby, or when a mom was having twins. MIL already mentioned how I'll need another one since we are having twins now... I do not want one, and would not expect anyone to buy us stuff since they were just so generous a little more than a year ago!
I think it is always fun to celebrate the expected birth of a new child with my friends. Its a special time to celebrate, if it is the first or fourth.
I have one friend who has 3 kids. Twins that are 7, a girl age 3 and a new baby boy. The recent baby was a bit unexpected and the previous baby items had already been given away. So it was perfect to have a new shower.
Just enjoy the party, friendship, and love of a new life.

Re: Are 2nd baby showers common...
Not really. Only 1 person I know had a 2nd one and it was more of a brunch/lunch, let's all sit around and drink and eat sort of thing.
