High-Risk Pregnancy

GD Girls-Please Come In-Need Help

So here's my situation, and I am hoping you can lend some advice.  I am 18 weeks pregnant, and have insulin resistance, and was always on Metformin.  I was taken off Met at 11 weeks b/c my fasting sugars were too high and put on a 1X per day dose of insulin at night-NPH.  Went from 5 units and now I'm at 9.  My sugars are always on the low side and I never feel well. I am thinking something is wrong with my baby or my hormones or something.  I feel fine other than that.  Does anyone know if your insulin needs can decrease in the second trimester?  I am really scared something is wrong with my hormones or the baby.  I am going to the Endo tomorrorw for my appointment, but an Endo isn't a Gyno obviously.  Please come in with your thoughts/experience.  Thank you for reading this.

  • Your body does crazy things when pregnant.  It is totally possible that you could need more "sugars" because of the increasing growth of the baby.  It's also possible that your hormones aren't making your insulin resistance that much worse.

If your numbers are consistently low then I would say something should change- either what you're eating, or the dosage of insulin.

Are you connected with a knowledgeable OB for your insulin.  You should probably be working with someone that is "high risk" or at least familiar with the needs of GD to help you manage this.  Also make sure your Endo and your OB are talking.
