Solids and daycare

I'm popping over from 3-6 since many of you probably have experience with this.  We'll be starting solids in a few weeks and I'm curious how others have done this if your LO goes to daycare.

We're planning to start in the morning on a weekend.  What time of the day does your LO get solids at daycare?  Do they get it around the same time as their bottle?    How does your daycare let you know how your LO is doing with eating?

Also, does your daycare introduce new solids or do you do that at home?

Re: Solids and daycare

  • We started with rice cereal in the morning and asked the daycare to give DD rice cereal after her afternoon nap each day. She takes a bottle every 4 hours so it was about 2 hours after her last bottle. I found if we tried to give her a bottle before her solids she wasn't hungry enough. We talked to the caregiver every few days about how she was doing. Overall the daycare worked well with us and DD seemed to catch on pretty quickly. I would say it does take time so only trying solids at home could be a long process to get her to catch on.

  • We started at home too, doing supper rice cereal and then what ever she didnt finish we put into her night time bottle (fast flow nipple).  After a couple weeks or whatever it takes to get them used to it then you can talk to your daycare provider about adding one time at daycare.  you are suppose to add them one at a time.

once you start adding fruits and veggies (after 6 months) it is up to you on what you want to do with new introductions.  my LO did really well with new foods so i just told our DCP to write down each day what she gives her on her report (which she does anyway).  that way i could see the things she had ate that day at daycare.

we did oatmeal for breakfast, then the rice cereal with fruit for lunch and the rice cereal with veggies for supper.  that worked well for us! once she was eating more table food and meat for supper i changed it to fruit with the oatmeal and veggies with rice for lunch and the meals for supper.

everyone is different but this worked for us!

    Good luck

  • When we started, we just fed solids in the evening. When we were ready to go to two meals a day, he started getting a fruit in the morning (at daycare) and then a veggie still in the evening. We always saved new foods for the weekend so we could introduce them ourselves. At our 6 month appt, our dr. told us to start doing three meals a day so he gets breakfast and lunch at daycare and dinner at home. It works out best because of his naps and bottles if he eats a fruit and veggie around 11 am and then a fruit mid-afternoon. He normally sleeps from around 8am until 10:30 so daycare can't get the fruit in him in the morning. We go to a home daycare and she only has three kids during the day. She had to play around with his schedule at first but after a few days it all worked out fine. She keeps a daily log of when he naps, eats, and has dirty diapers.

We started in the afternoon and just started doing dinner at home, and later dinner and breakfast at home before introducing the third meal at daycare.  We found the couple of times we tried to send food for her for lunch that they hardly even tried to feed her a bottle and said she was probably full from the solids.  At the time she wasn't even eating a tsp.  i hardly think so!

This is what I'm nervous about.  DD doesn't eat well at daycare right now (from her bottle), so I'm nervous she's going to eat even less when they start on solids!
