Name opinion

What do you think of the name Fred? DH and I are on the fence about #2, but we discuss names every now and then. We have a girl name picked, but can't agree on a boy's name. Fred was my father's father - love and miss him so much! I flip flop on the name a lot - one day I think it's "cool and retro" then I think it's "an old man name" - what do you think? And it would be Fred - not Frederick. It totally works with our last name.

And yes, I know all that matters is that we like it, just curious!!

Re: Name opinion

  • Honestly it's not my style.  But like you said all that matters is that you like it!

  • I don't care for Fred as a given name but could overlook it if there is family significance. You could call him Freddy. That's kinda cute.

  • I like/love the name because it was my favorite grandfather's and is my uncle's.  However, I'm not big on it these days for LO's.  It just seems like such a grown up name for a baby/child....I know, eventually they grow up.  Actually, now that I think about it more....that might make it all the cuter on a LO.

I recently met a toddler named, Hank.  It seemed so funny to call him that = it was adorable.

  • nms, I think "old man name".

  • I'm a big believer in giving the kid options and not giving a nn as a full name. I like Fredrick, nn Fred. As an adult, he may prefer Fredrick or Rick.

  • It's a dad name. And yes, I know boys can grow up to BE dads, but I don't see it fitting a newborn in 2010.

    Middle name?

I know - I can't imagine my grandfather as a little baby/little boy with that name! I was thinking maybe using it as a middle name.

If we can saddle our son with "Leander" for his MN, "Fred" shouldn't give anyone pause. :)

  • I wouldn't use it myself, but if I met a little boy named Fred, I'd think his name was super cute. And that his parents were probably pretty cool and "outside the box". :)
  • I dont mind it, though it's not a name I would consider for my own son. I do, however, see it being on the cusp of being a "cool and retro" name in a couple years. ?I say go for it!
