Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

At what age...

do kids need their own seats on an airplane?  DS will be 2 years and 2 months when we fly to Florida, like a 2.5 hour flight.  Can he still just sit on our lap?

Re: At what age...

  • If you lie and say he's under two he can sit on your lap but he is supposed to have his own seat after the age of 2.

  • 2 years for most airlines as far as I know

you need a birth certificate to fly with a LO, so lying is pretty pointless

  • Yeah, age two is the limit to sit on your lap. I just flew last week. DD is only a year old and they made us show her birth certificate at the check in desk to verify her age. So I don't know if you'd be able to get away with it.
  • 2 years and you have to provide some kind of ID for LO (birth certificate) so no point in lying.

    Pretty much this.

The airlines should check the BC.  I know when DD was younger and they could tell she was no where near the age of two, checking the BC wasn't a big deal.  But now that she is older and looks two, they check the BC every time.

To the OP, yeah they can sit in your lap but at the age of two you'll have to buy a ticket regardless.

We've taken DS on at least 8 flights and nobody has ever asked for any ID for him.

He has, however, been quite obviously under 2yo for all of them. Our next flight in April will likely be different, as he looks much older and can talk/walk now, though he won't be 2 until June--we'll have his birth cert. with us just in case.

This. They will ask for it.  DD and I just flew over Spring Break, I did have to show it to the chick at the counter.

  • 2 years old.

We are traveling this summer when Colin will be about 21-22 months and we are getting him his own seat.  He really needs his own space.
