My MIL seems to think they never are. Either A. the baby is not rolling (period) or enough to hit the sides of the crib or B. the baby is old enough they are pulling the bumper down and eventually hurting themselves.
I went all out and bought the breatheable variety and was insistant on having it set up before anything else in the room - she thinks I'm pretty silly, but then again this is baby #1, i'll learn
Re: When are baby bumpers a necessity?
They are never a necessity. They might help in certain cases (if limbs are getting stuck) but I wouldn' tuse the word "necessity."
From what I've read, there isn't a reason to have them in the begining, and actually most experts say you shouldn't put them in at first. I would wait until LO starts moving, or at least wait to see if you do need them.
Bumpers in the traditional sense- the padded pretty thing that wraps around the crib- are never recommended.
If you're worried about your LO getting an arm or leg stuck in the slats once it's to the rolling around stage then you can use a breathable bumper.

Never. But...... I've never had an issue without using one. If either girl got "stuck" in the slats, I simply helped them out. They never got hurt. I'm sure that if they got hurt, I'd probably be singing a different tune:)
According to Health Canada, they are never a necessity and strongly recommended against (regular bumpers). They don't really talk about the breathable variety. But...... like I said, I've never had a problem not using them and if I did, well, then, I'd probably say something entirely different:)

For us it was a very small window when we could use the bumper. We kept it off when he was newborn.....and put it back on maybe from 5 month, to 9 months. Then he started pulling himself up at like 9 months, and climbing on the bumper. Which made me afraid he'd fall out of the crib. So, we took it off then. He never got limbs stuck in the crib.
I wouldn't say it's a necessity. We are not using on this time.
