So, I have a bunch of new mommy questions....

Hello, this is my first official post as a mommy. I'll start by saying I love it! Okay, here are my gazillion questions:

When do pregnancy symptoms go away? Namely the snoring (I was never a snorer before but DH says I am still snoring) and the breakouts.

How much is too much pumping? I feed her for 10-20 minutes on each side and then I can still pump out several ounces. Sometimes she chokes on my flow and I pull her off and I'm just leaking everywhere. I've already got a pretty good freezer stash of about 8-10 bottles or bags and I didn't start pumping until Monday night.

When did you introduce a bottle if you were exclusively breastfeeding? My mom is in town for a month and she and my DH are eager to help feed but the LC told us to wake 2-3 weeks before introducing a bottle however each LC we spoke to said something different for a number of things so I don't know what is accurate and what is not.

She falls asleep a lot during feedings (I've been told the jaundice is partly to blame) so a feeding of 10-15 minutes on each side will take an hour because I have to try and wake her up between sides. If I let her, she'd fall asleep after 5-7 minutes of feeding. She's a snacker like her momma. Any tips here? Or should I just let her feed like she is? She's already over her birth weight so I know she's feeding well. She was 7 lbs 5.5 oz at birth, was discharged right at 7 lbs on Sunday and at her appt on Tuesday she was already 7 lbs 11 oz.

Any tips for hiccups? The pedi said it was normal but she gets them a lot.

I had more questions but I can't think of them now...thanks!!!!!

Re: So, I have a bunch of new mommy questions....

  • All sounds pretty typical. Hiccups just happen for some babies. DS2 had them off and on for the first tree months.

With DS1, I introduced bottle early, but no more than one a week for the first few months. He nursed pretty well for 8 months.

DS2 is not a good nurser. At 3 weeks of age, he was given mostly bottles in NICU for a week and he has not nursed well since...there may be other factors at work or maybe you really do need to be careful with that?

    1. I'm still having issues with the breakouts, although they're starting to get better.  It was really ugly initially post-partum for me - hopefully you'll have better luck!
    2. Pumping after nursing signals your body that it needs to make more milk, so that may actually be contributing to your leaking issues.
    3. We waited until C was...5 weeks old? maybe 6? before introducing a bottle because we wanted to make sure it didn't pose any issues, and because there was really no need to until that point.  I know some people say to wait 4 weeks.  I would probably err on the side of caution and at least wait the 2-3 weeks the LC advised, but that's just me.
    4. Gripe water sometimes helps with the hiccups around here.

It takes your body at least a month to start feeling somewhat normal and even after that other weird things still go on for like a few months (wait until your hair starts falling out, that's freaky!). Especially with breastfeeding, I think it takes your body a while to regulate. I don't think I felt completely normal until after I went back to work at 12 weeks.

Sounds like you may have oversupply ( I had the same thing). I pumped too much not realizing at the time that was only making it worse. I wouldn't pump a ton right now until your body regulates out a little more. Maybe just one session a day or something, I wouldn't pump everytime you nurse, etc. Otherwise you'll just end up producing a ton, engorged, and more at risk to get Mastitis (which is NOT fun), and it will make nursing harder for your little one.

We introduced at 1 month. I know plenty that have introduced sooner and had no issues.

She falls asleep a lot during feedings (I've been told the jaundice is partly to blame) so a feeding of 10-15 minutes on each side will take an hour because I have to try and wake her up between sides. No tips there, but if she's gaining weight, you're doing just fine!

Any tips for hiccups? The pedi said it was normal but she gets them a lot.

Totally normal, if someone figures out a hiccup cure for babies or adults let me know haha :-).

I had more questions but I can't think of them now...thanks!!!!!

Like others I probably wouldn't be pumping right now.  I didn't start pumping until DS was probably 3 weeks old or so.  Granted I never had an over supply problem.  It takes the body a few weeks to regulate so by pumping you are sending a signal that more milk needs to be produced.

We didn't do the 1st bottle until 4 weeks.  DS did take a pacifier several hours after birth though and never had "nipple confusion." At 4 weeks we started doing 1 bottle a day.

She falls asleep a lot during feedings (I've been told the jaundice is partly to blame) so a feeding of 10-15 minutes on each side will take an hour because I have to try and wake her up between sides. The falling asleep during feeding is very common with a newborn.  It probably took 45min to an hour for feedings in the beginning.  I would just do my best to stroke his face etc. to get him to wake up and eat.

Any tips for hiccups? The pedi said it was normal but she gets them a lot.

I had more questions but I can't think of them now...thanks!!!!!

  • The snoring might take a bit of time to go away, things are still a little smushed in your body so you're not necessarily breathing the same way you did before being pregnant.

Too much pumping...not sure there's too much.  What it will do is help you create a stash for when you go back to work/when you have a date night/when you have an out of town trip/etc.  I say store as much as you can now because it's harder to pump when you're working and when she's older and you're chasing her everywhere.

Introducing a bottle...this is not one I can answer based upon success.  We tried in vain to get DD to take a bottle (starting at 10 days) all the way through her first year and it never happened.  They say wait until BFing is firmly established so whenever you feel that you and L have a hold on it maybe you can try.

DD fell asleep a LOT during feedings.  I undressed her and kept a damp cloth close by to put on the bottom of her feet...being slightly cool kept her a little more alert than slightly full and dressed.

Hiccups...they outgrow them.  If they're so violent that it causes her to spit up I'd let her pediatrician know.

You're doing a great job so far!  Congrats again!

I never had either of these symptoms, so I am no help with that~ sorry

I would limit your pumping to once a day.  I had the same issues in the beginning, a massive oversupply.  I only pumped first thing when I woke up and that was it.  I would still easily get over 10 ounces per pumping session, which was plenty to build up a very nice stash.  I never was able to use the tiny bottles that came with the pump, but I found the 8 ounce Dr Browns to rest easier on my knees so I wouldn't have to hold them.

F got a bottle sometime that first week.  DH took the first "morning", 5 to 6 am, feeding.  That way I got a solid 6 hours of sleep every night from the get go (very helpful!) and she was cool between the bottle and nursing.  We never had any issues.  She never really took more than one bottle a day and when she started STTN, she often wouldn't have a bottle at all.

She falls asleep a lot during feedings (I've been told the jaundice is partly to blame) so a feeding of 10-15 minutes on each side will take an hour because I have to try and wake her up between sides. I would rub her head or neck to rouse her when she fell asleep, which was often in the beginning.  Sounds like she is gaining weight, you are doing great!

Enjoy them, they are adorable =).

  • When do pregnancy symptoms go away? I never snored, so I'm no help.  It took a good 2 weeks for my feet to look decent and almost 4-6 for me to be able to wear my boots!  However I still have shoes that are too snug.  And that was a symptom.

How much is too much pumping? No idea.  I never had an oversupply issues (sounds like you may).  In fact, we had to suppliment the first week...but I had a big boy.  Pumping is going to tell your body you need more milk, so you may want to slack off a little.

When did you introduce a bottle if you were exclusively breastfeeding? C had the bottle right away because we had to suppliment.  He never thought twice about it and was never confused.  Again, big boy.  We did try the Platex drop-ins at first and I thought the nipple was too hard because he was taking forever to eat it.  We switched to Avent and never looked back.

I remember the first few weeks being like that!  I'd start with pulling off socks to tickle feet, then taking off pants...then taking off the shirt and by the end C was down to his diaper.  I think it probably takes them so much effort to nurse that they just wear out.  I'd put more effort into waking him up in the middle of the night because I wanted to go back to sleep, but the first few weeks I feel like we nurse all.day.long.  And apparently it's normal.  :-)

Any tips for hiccups? Try Gripe Water.  Sometimes that would work for us, but not always.  Usually the key was to nurse him or try to get him to fall asleep.

When do pregnancy symptoms go away? Namely the snoring (I was never a snorer before but DH says I am still snoring) and the breakouts.  I would say around 3-6 months.  Just takes a while for the hormones to knock down.  Or if you are BFing, maybe longer. (I still have my linea nigra - very lightly - and DS will be 1 y/o tomorrow.  Sad  I keep hoping it will go away!)

You will take a few weeks to regulate.  Just keep doing what your doing until you figure out what your supply will level off to.

Meh - everyone is scared of nipple confusion, etc. - I think DS was a few weeks old before we bottle fed, but that was because I didn't want to skip a session b/c I was scared my supply would drop - so I figured I would just feed if I was going to pump, anyway.  I think I finally decided to sleep through a feeding at night at around 3 weeks, although it wasn't comfortable, I was glad to get more than 3 hours in a row!  I also used the nipple shield for about 4 weeks, then successfully weaned off of it.  We were lucky that DS didn't really care where the food was coming from, as long as it was coming!  I am sure others have different opinions, though.

Babies are really sleepy that young.  I was really stressed out about when DS fed and how he fed (I think the pedis and LCs in the hospital put fear into me).  The second time around, i hope I am more relaxed about it - looking back, it wasn't worth the stress I put into it.  If he is hungry, he will eat, if he is tired, he will sleep.  If she is gaining weight, I wouldn't worry.  Just feed on demand, until she starts to develop more of a schedule (maybe not until 2-3 months)  (I would still recommend waking them up every 3 hours for the 1st 2 weeks, then start letting them wake up on their own).

Any tips for hiccups? The pedi said it was normal but she gets them a lot. I alwasy felt so bad when DS had the hicupps, but they didn't seem to bother him at all.

I had more questions but I can't think of them now...thanks!!!!!

  • If Landry has the hiccups too long, she turns into Angry Baby. Slowly taking 1/2tsp of liquid from the Gripe Water syringe gets rid of them before the syringe is empty. When I ran out of Gripe Water, I used pumped BM. Worked instantly. Landry had the bottle introduced way too early thanks to the cluster that was our hospital stay. We never could get her back to nursing. Every baby is different but baby#2 won't see a bottle for a long time.
  • Just wanted to say that the Gripe Water worked wonders for us.  His hiccups would stop instantly.  He hicupped to the point that he would be uncomfortable and whiny so tried it and it was great.
  • I never ever used Gripe Water to get rid of hiccups, our pedi said to just give her a little water- less than a 1/2 oz  (actually she would take just a couple of sips) and that did the trick everytime cause she had the hiccups SO much as a newborn.
