I'm reading reviews on the dentists who were recommended to me and it just got me curious...[Poll]

Re: clicky: your child and the dentist

  • I took her right before she turned two, but it didn't go so well.  She cried the whole time and wanted nothing to do with it, even though we have a great pediatric dentist.  We'll try again before she's 3.  I think she'll do better (I'm hoping!) because she's been much better at the doctor recently and seems very interested in what they're doing.  I hope it will carry over to the dentist too.

  • I would have waited until age 2, but she chipped a tooth at 17 mos, so we went then.

Ugh, I'm surprised this hasn't happened to us yet!  That's one reason I want to get him in now - I'd like to know the dentist before we come in with something needing to be fixed!

  • We went before a year, but it's because he had a really bad eruption hematoma I wanted to make sure wasn't something more serious. At that time, they told us not to come back until 3. So he'll go next year unless there is another issue.

  • I said by 2 years, but it's a little fib...She turned 2 on 3/11 and has an appt on 3/29.
  • I took DS in a little before he was 18 months. They didn't really do much and he hated it. We took him in 6 months later and he did great. He let them brush his teeth and he did really good.

This was the main reason our pedi gave at DS's 2-year appointment, for going to the dentist.  He said it wasn't really essential at that age, but that we may want to have a relationship with one in case of accident/emergency.

We ended up taking DS when he was 2yr 3mo old.

  • I don't remember how old Caleb was when he first went, around 2 I think. But Rory went last August so that would have been 20 months old. She did pretty good. They gave her a pair of kid sunglasses to wear while she was under the "sun" (the light) and she let them count her teeth. That's all they did. She also got to watch Spongebob while they counted her teeth. They said I didn't have to bring her back for a year. She is still missing 6 teeth too!!!
  • I plan to take her in May with me for my appt (she'll be 2 yrs, 5 months  I'm bringing a goofy kids-sized folding lawn chair to set up while i'm in the chair to watch or read her books, what ever.  She came once but stayed in the waiting room.  This time I'll bring her in with her "safe" chair.  Then hopefully in 6 months she'll come with me again and have a turn to get her teeeth counted.

I didn't have any plans of taking him anytime soon, but he also chipped a tooth so he went right at his 2nd birthday.

  • Our dentist said that unless there are any problems, there is no need to bring Ben until he's 3.  I talked to the pedi about it to get her opinion and she said the same thing.
  • DD is going at 2 1/2. She has been going with me to each cleaning since she was born. Each time I go she sits on my lap and plays with the sucky thing and watches me get my teeth cleaned. At my next cleaning they will put her in the chair and start to look at her teeth. I was told it would probably only take 5 minutes. When she is 3 she will start getting cleanings.
  • our dentist wont see them until they are 3....DS has his first appt on Monday
  • We just went and it was a really good experience. DD is 27 months.

We had the same experience!  DD cried and was so freaked out the whole time.  I hope it goes better next time we take her.  She has an appointment in August already scheduled.
