Runners -- Arch problems?

Are any runners having arch problems?  I've been so, so lucky to have a really great pregnancy that I've been able to run a ton through, but lately my arches have been KILLING me when I run.  It feels exactly like plantar fasciitis but I'm wondering if this is more common during pregnancy and what I can do about it.  I'd feel lame if this is the reason I have to stop running. :(

Re: Runners -- Arch problems?

  • I had plantar fascitis and the only thing that helped was taking about 6 weeks off from running at the beginning of my pregnancy. I had ran with it from March until July hoping it would just go away.  Once I took the time off  it healed and then I ran for the rest of my pregnancy.  It hurt bad though!

You can try insoles and getting a roller for your feet to stretch them out, and it just feels good. Good for you for making it as long as you have!
  • It might be PF or just the relaxin making all your ligaments loose. My feet were extra achy towards the end of my pregnancy after a run and I think it was the relaxin. I ran up until the day I delivered and I had several bouts of weird things that made running harder at times. I had compartment syndrome symptoms because of water retention/swelling from about 30 weeks on, if the swelling wasn't bad on a particular day then I'd have a good run, if it was bad then I was barely able to hobble out a couple miles! Don't push it because you don't want an injury, but I also found that my aches and pains varied from day to day and week to week. Good luck and good job on keeping it up!
  • Hmm, my right arch is bothering me, but I figured it was because I was overdue for a new pair of running shoes and that I'm turning out (pronating) my feet while I waddle/run. You might want to try going to a running store and asking for some advice.

  • just monday i had really bad arch pain in my left foot. i think it was from an 18 mile run i did the week before, it just didn't show up right away. so, all day at work on monday i wrapped my foot in an ace bandage which really helped, the pressure felt great and it was nice for support, too, when i walked. i just ran this morning and didn't have any problems.

    good luck!

  • My ankles and the outer part of my right foot have been bothering me since about 22 weeks (I'm now 30 weeks).  My shoes have about 250 miles on them.  I just ordered a new pair and ran in them for the first time this morning and it made a huge difference.  I normally wouldn't retire the old ones quite yet, or I'd at least alternate with them, but I think I need the support of the new shoes while I'm carrying the extra weight.

Wow -- I never thought of that -- I can easily go 300 miles without any problems but I never thought to replace them more frequently now that I'm pregnant but it makes sense.

And, thanks everyone for the responses!  I did a 5-miler and a 4-miler this week and felt a *little* better so hopefully it's something I can stretch through!

  • Yup--I normally get more than 250 miles out of the shoes, too, but I've been pregnant and heavier than usual for many of the miles on them and clearly need all the support I can get at this point.  I'm keeping the old ones to rotate once I'm running (or at least walking and working back up to it) post partum.  Good luck.
