Talking?

So Allie is 12.5 months now.  She really doesn't say much at all.  She says dada, mama, uh-oh... but she really only knows what uh-oh means.  That's it.  She babbles all the time, seems to want to talk, but doesn't.

How old were your LOs when they started talking?

What did you do to help?

Re: Talking?

  • There is a big range, I have one friend that their LO didn't say anything until about 17 months, then another friend's LO was had 100 worlds in her vocabulary by 17 months.  Nicolas' vocabulary is increasing everyday but he still won't say mama or dada to us regularly.  He knows dog though...it is too cute.

  • Jeremiah is 19 (almost 20!) months and has just started saying actual words in the last month. He does babble in a conversation style (he waits to respond, etc), and he understands everything we say. Our pedi said that it was just fine since he was doing those other things.
  • Caleb says mama and dada. Sometimes it's part of his babbling, other times I know he says it with meaning. He said uh-oh once, and sometimes says up. I don't really worry about words yet, but I try to consistently repeat words for him to hear. We are also doing signing with some words now, he knows the sign for milk.

  • Ella says mama and dada, but I don't think she knows what it means though.  She did just say duckie for the 1st time today and nana for banana.  She babbles a lot, pauses for answers, and when I ask her to bring me something (doll, toy, etc) she will so I'm not worried.  I tend to think that one day it's all going to click and we won't be able to shut her up :)

  • Savannah is a lot like Allie - saying Mama, Dada, and uh-oh. She also says (but not as often as the other 3), hi, done (like when she is drinking something and wants me to grab if from her when she is done), and again (but it sounds like "ga!"). I'm sure Allie can do nonverbal things too, right? Savannah waves, claps, blows kisses, & high fives.

I'm not even worried, though. I know they all develop differently. :) She jibber jabbers all day long, things that are inaudible, but as long as she is doing that - I'd say you are fine!

  • Jocelyn isn't "talking" but she is saying words, and understands what she is saying, like duck, ball, bye bye, da da, mama and I think she has said dog, but none of it but bye bye and duck are really clear. If I say to her, get me a diaper, she'll go get a diaper, or to throw something away, she'll know what to do.

I basically talk to her ALL DAY LONG. Like, mommy is cutting up cheese, here is your cheese, here is your pretzel, mommy is tying her shoe, turn off light, mommy is eating a sandwich. She also knows her head, tummy, feet, nose, ear, hair, hairbow, etc and will touch those things when I say them. Playing head shoulders knees and toes taught her that. I read somewhere to do all that and it seems to work, she understands us and responds most of the time, which I feel is a better milestone than talking.  But that being said, it is way too early to even worry about it, I didn't even expect her to say anything yet, but it is annoying because that seems to be the first thing people ask, is she talking yet, ummm..no!!

  • Yeah, Holly isn't really talking either, but she has shown a lot of development in her communication and understanding lately. She says Dada, and that clearly means Daddy. However, it also means baby, Mommy, and dog. LOL... She refuses to say Mama. I'll say "Mama!" and she'll reply, "Dada!" and giggle..hehe. She says bye bye and uh-oh, and occasionally, cup. She constantly babbles though, in a gibberish language that sounds like Ewok-speak. I love it. hehe.

She does a lot of things on command--says bye bye, "washes her hands" (rubs her hand together--she learned this by watching us use hand sanitzier after changing her diaper--she started imitating us). She'll also respond yes or no by shaking her head if we ask her if she wants something.

My DH was concerned that she should be talking more. (it cracks me up what he decides to worry about). But there is such a wide range for that, that I am not the least bit concerned. I think she's well on track.
