Pty Trng question - what am I not considering?

Thanks to all that responded to my potty question the other day.  I think we'll end up getting the bjorn.  But I noticed that a lot of you now use the seats that fit on your toilet.  Now, I know that is the obvious next step from individual potty, but I'm wondering if anyone went right to the seat on the big toilet?

It seems like everyone uses a little potty first - and I can see the advantages of that, but I can also see the advantages of putting her right on the big potty (w/ a smaller seat) and teaching her that way.  That way she won't worry as much when we're in public having to use a "big" public toilet, or if we're at a friend's house or something.  I know I'd have to help her sit on a smaller seat at first - but eventually she'd get her balance on that, right?

I'd love to hear feedback from moms that have been there.  If you would not consider going right to the big potty w/ a small seat, please tell me why?  What am I not considering?  What will be a huge PITA that I have not thought about?  Anyone tried what I am talking about and failed?

TIA!

  • Jakob never used a smaller potty.  He went right onto the toliet with the snap-on seat.  It was just easier that way.  I had to pick him up and sit him on the toliet at first, but that was no big deal.

He was also 3 years old.  It might be different with a 1 or 2 year old.

  • I think it really just comes down to what your DD wants to use.  My DD wanted to sit on the little potty at first (we got it around 22 months) and now she just wants to sit on the big potty... We bought the little potty because when we tried to sit her on the big potty she would get all upset, so I figured a little potty would be a better way to introduce her to the idea. Now that she's comfortable with the idea she wants to sit on the big one like Mommy and Daddy.

I should add that DD isn't potty trained, we just let her use the potty when she asks and ask her occasionally, right now were just in the learning / experimenting with going to the potty phase.

Ditto.  I have both for DD.  When we started, she would sit mostly on the little one.  Now she uses both.  I am not pushing the potty issue and letting her decide when and what she prefers to sit on.

  • We had both options available to Jake and he has never used the little potty... he prefers to sit on the big potty with the seat in.  He likes to play with the little one since it plays music but that's it.  So, I bought those seats at Walmart for each bathroom ($8 each).  It's really a lot easier- nothing to clean out- so I'm kind of grateful!  I have a step stool for him to use to get up there.  He likes to do it 'all by myself'.

They also have these fold up portable rings for going out in public which I also think is an advantage because he's used to sitting on the big potty at home.   https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3518178

  • For #2, we'll start w/ the seat on the potty.  I didn't b/c I thought the little seat would be easier and that she'd take to it better.  I knew she was intimidated by the big potty so it made more sense to me. However - my assumptions weren't really correct.  I bought the kind that fits on the toilet before she was PT and she took to it instantly.  (Helped that it had Dora on it.)  Never was scared and I think it helped her feel like mom and dad - so more grown up.  Once we had the one on top, she never used the little potty again.

For public - we put the paper on the seat and sit her on top.  She can hold herself up or I'll hold her.  I never used a portable version and my kid is definitely skiddish.  I was concerned about her going in public but she's never had an issue.  Also - if you're on an automatic flushing potty, take a long piece of tp, fold it in half and put it over the sensor so it doesn't flush on your kiddo.  Those auto flushers are really scary for little kids and it's a good way to have your kid never want to go in public again.

  • DD started on the little potty, but we have several different inserts for the toilet and she uses all of them with no issue at home, in public, or at other ppl's homes. Sometimes she prefers the little potty ("My yittle potty! I want to use my yittle potty!") and other times she wants the big toilet (My big potty! I want my big potty!").

We have a diaper sprayer so cleaning out the little one isn't an issue. I'd actually rather do that that clean the inserts.

Oh, one issue we had with inserts was her small size. Seriously, she is so small for her age and she was about 22 mos when she started wanting to PL so her tiny little butt was just too small for most of the inserts.

  • Okay, thanks all for your help.  I think we'll start off w/ a smaller seat for the big toilet then, and if need be we can always go get a individual potty.  I mean, we'll eventually need the smaller seat anyway, right?

For those that have used them, I'm assuming you're talking about the kind that actually attach TO the toilet, right?  Or are you talking about the kind that are only put on the toilet while the kid is on it?  It looks like BBB and BRU  just have the kind that you CAN'T attach to the toilet, or maybe the descriptions are not clear...

Would you guys mind posting links to something similar to what you used?

  • sorry- on a mac so no clicky abilities, but here is what we have...

Walmart also has plain white ones that are like $8.

  • so glad you posted this! saving for later.
  • We just ordered this one for DD, so I can't tell you if we like it or not. I like that an adult can use the seat too. Her bathroom is the same one guests would use.
