Toddlers: 24 Months+

The getting dressed battle continues

HOLY FIT. The entire week, my daughter has decided to become a terror child when I wake her up to get dressed. This morning was a real treat, dragging her out of the house to the car and forcing her into the car seat.

From wanting to put her own pants on (HI she's 2.5, she CAN'T GET THEM ON RIGHT) to me picking out the wrong colors socks.....oy.

I pull into the gas station to get gas all the while listening to her scream, go to the fuel tank, start fueling, come back to the car and all sweet and innocent, she says "Mommy, are you getting gas?"

What the....I swear somedays she is possessed!

  • Funny how they turn it off and on so quickly, huh?

  • It is such a joy isn't it?  The other day my daughter had a screaming fit because she didn't want help with the buckle on her carseat.  We were outside the babysitter's and I'm sure the whole neighborhood heard her.  We go through the same thing with getting dressed and undressed!  I love the toddler years.

  • I stumbled on a good trick that works.  When DD says no, I say okay, tell me when you are ready and walk away.  I make sure she is safe, but Dora goes off, toys go away and I just wait.  I'll ask again (in an off-handish way)and sometimes she say no, sometimes yes.  It usually takes about 30-45 seconds of waiting for her to say "ready".  And I usually do something I need to do while waiting.  If I battle her, it can go on for a terrible 30-60 minutes, plus the car ride, too.

My darling daughter just turned 4 years old.
  • Unfortunately, I know how you feel.  Cole hates changing clothes, period.  Whether it's jammies to clothes, or clothes to jammies - it's a problem.  Usually involving some degree of coercing, reminding, negotiating, waiting, consequences, etc.

We've had to start doing a lot of things earlier than we used to.  Getting him up, dressing him, heading downstairs and into the car, because it is all taking alot longer than it used to.

It sucks when you are in a time crunch!  I end up being short with him and find myself saying the word "hurry" a lot.  I hate that.

  • Ah yes...we're having one of these weeks too.  Thank goodness I'm home with them right now, and we rarely have to be somewhere at a certain time, so I can get away with just walking away.  Tuesday when Maggie had an appointment, I ended up putting Ruari in the car without boots or a coat (and injured my wrist in the meantime).  She was as sweet as pie when I got to the end of the lane way, and was an angel at the Drs office (once I got her boots and coat on).  Ohhhhhh...the fun!
