Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Is it just me or is "baby meat" dubious?

Our pedi said to introduce them fo rtheir protien, and I get that.  We're not vegetarians or anything, they just seem gross....pureed, unrefrigerated meat in a jar.  I dunno.  Yuk.

Though, he showed an interest in the canned cat food this morning, so it's better than that.

  • lol. I skipped pureed meats completely. I give him meat slices. He loves ham, steak, avocado.

He's also had chicken and turkey.

  • I refuse to use them! If I cooked a piece of chicken and put it in a jar on my counter it surely would not last for months. So what kind of massive preservatives are they putting in those meats? I've always introduced meats when my kids had teeth and I could make them fresh food.
  • what about making your own pureed baby meat?  it would probably taste a lot better than the stuff in a jar.

  • That's how I feel about most 'baby food' - thus I just give him 'real' freshly cooked/made food. It's easier, cheaper and I know exactly what he is eating and how it was prepared.
  • You can shred broiled chicken instead. Much healthier and I'm sure it tastes loads better than the meat in a jar stuff.

  • Ry will eat food with meat in it like chicken and veggie dinner, but will not eat pureed meat alone. I tried and he made the worst face ever and gagged.
  • I did the same thing as Katie - we do lunch meats torn into pieces, which is what our pedi rec'd.  Or we'll give him little pieces of whatever we're eating.  I also like the "meals" with meat in the jar as opposed to just plain meat; they have lasagna with meat sauce, turkey & veggies, etc.  DS likes those also.
  • I agree about the jarred meat.  Have you considered making it for your LO.  I poach boneless, skinless chicken thighs and then throw them in the food processor, put the chicken in ice cube trays and freeze.  For dinner I thaw one chicken cube with 2 veggie cubes.  Very easy!!

This is what I do.  Canned meat of any kind (not just baby food) grosses me out.

  • We just started it, and I too was really icked out by it. But hey. If Gerber says its OK I believe them. I suppose. It smells OK ...
  • I gave DD some chicken vegetable (the baby food jar kind) the other day and she hated it. I have never seen her dislike something so much. We have a few others, so I suppose I will see if she will eat any of those. BUT I am not buying any more! I even tasted it and it was kinda yucky!

  • Yeah, I waited to introduce meats with my older daughter until she could handle table food.  My younger daughter totally rejected purees so we started meats a bit earlier.  Pureed meat just seems nasty to me, even homemade that's not "shelf-stable."

  • Canned, purreed meat just SOUNDS gross, I never even bought any.  I poached three chicken breasts in a shallow pan until they were really really well cooked, then I chopped them into small dice.  They got frozen in small batches and when I'm ready to feed him I chop the diced chicken up into the finest crunms I can with a big knife, like you would herbs or something, and mix it into whatever veggie his is eating that day.

You can always serve beans, hummos, tofu, etc for protein.  I waited on meat per our pedi until 9 months when she was ready to eat it shredded or ground.

  • I used the Beachnut chicken and chicken broth and it smelled so bad.  I mixed with rice cereal and he was ok to eat it, but not by itself.  Will not use it again.  Like the boiled chicken ideas in pp.
