Babies: 9 - 12 Months

At what age would you use hair products on your baby?

The thread title sounds awful, but here's my problem: DD has longish hair.  It's like a little page boy cut, even length all around and about even with the bottom of her ear.  Her "bangs" are a teeny bit shorter, but growing out and can go back in a clip.

The back always gets fuzzy and knotted from her sleeping on it or from being in her car seat.   When I comb the knots out, it's still sort of bed head-y, for lack of a better word.  For day to day, I couldn't care less.  BUT, we're getting family pictures taken in a few weeks and it would be nice to have the back lay flat.  I got some of the Johnson & Johnson No Tangles spray and tried that.  It didn't help with the tangles much, but it did help her hair stay flat in the back.
Then I thought "What the heck?  She's perfect as she is, why am I buying hair products for her?"   Thoughts?

  • DD's hair is usually wild. We brush it and let it be unless we're going out or taking pics. Then I'll use a headband or clip. I've used a little bit of her baby lotion on the back to tame the frizzies but wouldn't use anything besides that.

  • I use gel in my DS's hair occasionally. It's actually for babies/toddlers.  I think the name is Jeneration's Baby.  Gotta do what you gotta do sometimes!
  • I've used Head and Shoulders to get rid of stubborn cradle cap.

  • I wouldn't use anything besides products made especially for babies.  In ten years you may look back at the family pictures and laugh about the time when DD had crazy hair.  Think of it as an enduring memory, not a fault.

  • As evidenced by my siggy LO was a ton of hair. It's get's really matted in the back so I've been searching for a product to help keep it less tangly. We've been using California Baby conditioner. You can leave it in or rinse it out and it seems to be working fairly well. I understand your point about product but I don't think it's a big deal. If you were blow drying it and putting hair spray in it that would be one thing, but a little something to help it lay flat is no biggy to me. It's def not "pagent mom" or anything.

  • I'm thinking of finding some sort of gel to use on DS because he has longer hair over his ears that sticks out and looks dorky. I don't want to cut it yet so gelling it would be a solution.

  • Web's hair is naturally curly and we use a detangler on it and I scrunch in some moisturizing curl hydrator and that makes it stay curly most of the time (instead of looking like chronic bed head all day).
  • I use the tangle stuff (target brand) everyday. Otherwise her hair gets huge knots in the back. I've put gel in her hair before. Not a ton- just to get her hair to stay down a little bit. It was fine and I would use again if I need to. It wasn't a baby one either.

  • Thanks, ladies.  I got to the point where I was totally overthinking this and couldn't decide if it was nothing or if this was the first in a slippery slope to pageant mom land.
  • I haven't used anything in my LO's hair yet but I have been thinking about it.  Her hair in the back is very frizzy.

  • Babies put their hands in their hair, so I would say stick to baby products only because they are probably more ok with going into the mouth/eye a bit more?? Not so irritating...
