Babies: 9 - 12 Months

? From Third Trimester

I hope you don't mind me posting a question on here.

DH and I both have small cars, 2 door honda civics. They are both paid for and we have no intentions on buying a 4 door or bigger car once the baby is here.

Has anyone used such a small car with a car seat? Is it that much of a pain to get the seat in and out of the car? I want truth so I can be prepared...

Thanks

  • My best friend has a Civic and has used it with a convertible and an infant car seat.  Not a problem.

My SIL drives a Yaris.  With a car seat.  She's fine.

  • we have a 2 door civic as well.... I ended up getting a 4 door elantra. Sometimes it's a pain getting the carseat out of that, I can't imagine struggling with the civic.
  • Are you and your DH smaller people?  I only ask because you should install the carseat to make sure that you can all fit in the car.  DH is really tall and he can't put a carseat behind his seat and fit comfortably in our SUV, much less a two door.

You could always do a "dry run" with a heavy bag of flour in the baby seat to see what it would be like to get the seat in and out.

  • we have a 4 door but I know many people with 2 door hondas and they have done just fine.

the reality is... even with a 4 door civic... one the carseat is in there its a tight squeeze for any passenger in the back... same for your backseat too. You will be fine!  You can get that infant seat in and out okay as long as your seats slide fwd (if they work right, they do!)

  • It's not so bad with an infant carseat but I couldn't image dealing with a convertible carseat.  You'd actually have to crawl in the backseat, with baby in hand, to buckle them in then crawl back out. Infant seat you can snap and go.  I bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee off of ebay before I had Hannah but I still have my 2 door car (stratus).  I walk Hannah to the sitter (across the street) and drive my car to work.  I use the Jeep on the weekends since she out grew her infant seat, she's 25lbs now.

  • I have a 2 door car and DH drives an extended cab truck.  The 2 door is a major PITA, but totally doable. DH's truck is no problem.  The bigger problem was finding a convertible car seat that fit rear facing comfortably.
  • we had a 2 door chevy cav... i actually perfer a 2 door over a 4 door. that way it was easier to climb in the backseat to get to the middle of the car with out a seat in my way.
  • DH drives a two door Acura.  The infant car seat fits, but I don't think a rear facing convertible would.  We had to put the infant car seat behind the passenger seat.  No one can sit in the passenger seat because it's pulled all the way forward and too close to the air bag.  Getting it in and out isn't the biggest deal.  It's a little struggle, but you can do it.
