How long do allergic reactions last?

I posted yesterday about Sam having weird red raised bunps on the backs on his hands. Since then, and I don't know if its related, I also noticed he has a faint rash on the side of his face. Anyway, its been 24 hours and the bumps are still there. Is that common with an allergic reaction? I'm just wondering if I should start lookingb at other possible causes!

  • OMG!  He still has it!  Did you give him any Benadryl?

  • I am not sure. Did you give him Claritin or Benadryl? Emily had what we thought was an allergic reaction a few months ago and we gave her Claritin and the hives and redness went away by the next day.  It happened again a few weeks later and the claritin took it away.

  • If it is spreading in patches, I'm guessing it is an allergic reaction.  Is it bothering him?  Itchy?

Rory has extremely sensitive skin, so we have this happen a lot.  If it is not bothering her, I will usually just keep it moisturized, otherwise, if it seems itchy or irritated, I'll give her Benadryl.  I hate giving her that stuff unless necessary.  It is usually cleared up in 2-3 days.

  • ::hangs head:: No, I didn't give him Brnadryl. I didn't have any in the house and Max had been running a fever all week, so I didn't want to take them out. Its been over 24 hours sijce Max ran a fever, so we can go out today. How long do you think it would take for the Benadryl to work?

Its not itchy and its localized to just the backs of his hands.

  • I agree with joseys...allergies usually spread in patches.  If it is localized to the back of his hands, I guess I'd think about contact dermatitis.  But, you said it was on his face too...which could be an allergic reaction.  The benadryl will relieve any discomfort associated with it.  Should kick in relatively quickly.
  • I'm running out in a second for the Benadryl. The rash on his face looks nothing like what's on his hands. Weird!
