daycare & BGs

There's a woman at daycare that insists on slathering O with diaper cream everytime she has the slightest bit of redness.  I gave them flushable liners and told them to use a very, very thin layer of cream only when absolutely necessary.  I get the diapers home tonight and there are 3 with cream on the diaper.  I scrubbed off as much as I could, then ran through the wash.  You can still see it on the diaper.

So help me, if these start to repel again, I'm switching daycares.

Re: daycare & BGs

  • That is really really frustrating!!  Does the same daycare worker change her diaper every time or does she have more than one teacher in her room?  Could you make a note and tape it around the cream as a reminder?  Yikes!

  • There's more than 1 teacher, but there's no doubt in my mind which one is doing it.  She's the afternoon lady and it's always the diapers that were put in the bag last.

I've talked to them over and over and over about it, plus I brought in special cream and wrote in a Sharpie only to use a thin layer with a liner.

I know I'm having a bad day, but I was fuming when I opened the bag and saw that.
  • That would really irritate me. What if you just stopped sending diaper cream altogether?

That being said, you're lucky to have found someplace that will use cloth diapers. When I checked a few years ago none of the more well-regarded centers in town would use them although I know of quite a few home daycares where they weren't an issue at all. Had something to do with NAEYC standards or something like that...

  • Ay ay ay.

Been there. It made my blood boil.

I found that even after I scrubbed with Dawn and stripped, I could still see faint traces of it on the diaper. I could even scratch it with my fingernail and white residue would come up.

However, I don't think it affected the overall performance of my diapers...have you checked to see if they're actually repelling?

After my 1098458304982398th hot rinse, though, no more cream was visible. I wish I could tell you that you didn't have to strip or rinse again, but if they're repelling because of it, you might have to.

CleoKitty - I was told the same thing at a couple day cares, that licensing requirements dictate something about contaminated surfaces. I challenged one of them to tell me how it was different than sposies (throw dipe into wetbag versus trash/pail) and they couldn't answer my question, even after looking up the written documents. Minor victory!

  • Oh that makes me mad for you!  I've never had to deal with a daycare but you are Olivia's mom--they should be obeying your wishes and if you don't want a lot of cream on her, they need to listen to you.  Grrrr.

  • I actually ended up telling my day care this week since we've resumed using our CDs that they are NOT to use any cream. Period. In fact, I should get it form them and take it home.

  • I had a conversation about it again with two of them this morning and plan on doing the same tonight with the other 2.  I switched from Aveeno to CA Baby, which I think is a little easier to put a thin layer on.  Aveeno seems really thick and creamy.  I also handwrote a note and taped it on there.

    :::fingers crossed:::

I wholeheartedly believe that too much diaper cream actually makes the rash worse.  If they just keep her clean and dry, it doesn't happen.

Sorry, I keep venting about this, it's just so frustrating because I don't think it's complicated, just different than what they're used to.

    Ditto.

And no apologies needed, at least for me. I've complained and vented about my diaper situation a lot lately too and feel the same way about day care. Not hard, just different.

  • While I can't help with the CD issue.  I will say that I totally agree that too much cream makes it worse.  There was one lady at E's daycare that would put cream EVERYWHERE!  I mean in every little crack!  With her UTI and Kidney issues I am a freak about keeping that little part of her clean and it made me so mad to get her home and have diaper cream caked in her girly parts.  I taped a big black note on her wipe container that said NO CREAM.  that helped them leave her booty alone.

  • I think that some people forget that the cream is medicated and should only be used as needed.  Would you give a child Tylenol every 4 hours just because you can? No.

And too much cream does make it worse.  The skin needs to breathe.

Someone on 6-12 recently asked if she should or shouldn't be using cream at every diaper change. I responded with, "would you take advil to prevent headaches every single morning?". So, ditto!
